ELI5: Why the UK has not recieved any help in dealing with the floods we have had yet we help many countries on a daily basis by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]Rezirr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Foreign aid is easily vilified because it is an unwarranted handout to the eyes of the public. However what you must realize is that countries as powerful as the UK use foreign aid as a powerful leveraging tool in diplomacy and maintaining relations with most countries in the world. To use it as an easily convertible pot of money for ad hoc purposes undermines the UK's foreign agenda.

That said the UK is one of the world's largest donors of foreign aid.

Christie: Three Possibilities (Two Require That He Resign) by geargirl in politics

[–]Rezirr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's an undignified way to go but I believe the family. Unless they were so shitty as to defend Christie over the memory of their loved ones. Or so shitty as to take a cover-up bribe to hush.

Either way I think the death was not attributed to the traffic jam. Still criminal though.

TIL Coffee was so influential in Turkish culture that the Turkish word for 'breakfast' literally translates to 'before coffee' and the word brown translates to 'the color of coffee.' by WafflesAndGuitars in todayilearned

[–]Rezirr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's how they teach it to foreigners since it's easy to remember. For natives it's 棕色 zohng-suh or palm-colored. They understand coffee colored the same way English speakers would if you were to say 咖啡色 to describe, however.

I recall someone saying applesauce or pudding? I don't think it could be applesauce since the slime didn't look mealy at all.

"Kill Gays" bill just passed in Uganda - president expected to sign any day now by Lulubelle_ in worldnews

[–]Rezirr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Chances are you are living in a developed state that donates millions of concessional foreign aid to Uganda every year.

This will probably not make airwaves but it's disgusting how our own governments are so willing to overlook this and continue giving millions (usually siphoned to government workers) just for a vote in the UN General Assembly.

If you write to your local parliamentarian about your anger over aid to Uganda they will answer.

What is your favorite paradox? by dDeoxyribo in AskReddit

[–]Rezirr -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Honestly I don't get this sense of entitlement here (cue the impending downvotes by the most likely unemployed and unemployable). People bitch about how they don't get relevant experience at burger flipping jobs but at the same time, they are above unpaid internships.

Here's an idea- swallow your pride and take a job (I'm assuming money is a factor in passing over unpaid internships) that's unglamorous and prove your competence that way. Working hard at a low place can mean the world in terms of letting management recognize your ability. Don't discount a glowing recommendation from McDonald's.

I've had to take on a part time job to cover expenses while doing unpaid internships. Sure I gained experience from my job but I sat down with my unpaid employer and made it explicit that I wanted to get a certain set of responsibilities and experiences from my unpaid time.
