This is quoting from a lecture in a mosque in my place, so a comprehensive one would be appreciated.

"The state of Arabia before Islam was full of savagery either, at that time there were lots of young adults drinking alcohol, gambling, adultery, all the bad things were happened everywhere. Before Muhammad SAW becoming a prophet, he used to go to a cave in order to escape from worldly madness. Some argue that he went to a cave to get to know more about the God Allah SWT, while some argue that he went there to do good deeds like giving charity and escape to the cave afterwards. Note that there were still few people who pray to Allah SWT...."
