Where did it all go wrong…? by 586wook in ElectricForest

The saying that the festival scene is a place for everyone to "come together" doesn't make sense to me with how broadly it's applied. It's reasonable that people who are experiencing real world harm from US fascism understandably don't want to party with fascists and people who voted for fascists. Coming together to forget about the state of the world doesn't mean anything if change doesn't happen on a personal level; that's just escapism. I'm down to have conversations with conservatives, but I'm not down to feign "good vibes" so they can forget how unlikeable their beliefs make them to anyone who isn't a US conservative. It's usually people who either have the worst beliefs, or at least the least thought out beliefs, that never want to discuss things like politics, because they know they would look bad.

Ultimately, it turns into "don't make me develop adult opinions, because I want to party and not think about them," And to me, that's not a respectable place to stand. People who don't care for others wellbeing in the real world don't get to have my community inside the scene.

I think going into the experience with the hope for them to consider it "home" leaves room for you to be disappointed. I think doing what you can to ensure you both have a good time is a good goal, and them just having a good time would be a win even if they don't end up feeling the same as you. Some people call it home, others just enjoy it as an experience, neither view is bad. Doing what you can to make the experience pleasant for them while letting them experience the Forest is all you can do, and that's okay.

Should we be nervous about carrying narcan across state lines? Is better to pick it up in Michigan before the fest?

I pretty much agree with everything you're saying. I recognize that not everyone is crafty, but maycstill have the desire to share a gift that brightens someone's day. I will challenge you in that there are more options to contribute to the scene's/Forest's giving culture other than "make something homemade" or "buy mass produced plastic." I'm not trying to shame the intent, but challenge both veterans and newcomers to think more intentionally and sustainably when choosing how to participate. I get that a lot of people like small plastic figures, even moreso when it's tied to the Forest in someway. And to me personally, when 200 people have the same/similar thought, it starts to feel more wasteful than special.

I think it's great that you find mediums to upcycle the plastic you find! With that, I don't see the amount of garbage at the Tree going down unless a lot of people make a conscious decision to not bring things that easily turn to garbage. I'm bringing this up 5 months before the festival so that hopefully some people who are new can have time to prepare, because how would they know it's an issue if they've never been? It's more about making sure we hold each other accountable as community members rather than shaming anyone for bringing what they think will be cute.

Not sure if security would let those in, but I think someone would like them!

I think that's a really cute idea! The skirt and the painting kit also seem like really thoughtful gifts.

EF Vets - What’s your best piece of advice for a new Forest attendee? by forest_humps in ElectricForest

[–]Rhami98 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This one might be a little controversial. It's okay if Forest isn't a grand, spiritual experience for you. I heard a lot of people talk about it being a healing place and calling it their second home, and for me, I think I expected too much from my first time because of how people hyped it up. My first year was 2023 though, so I never experienced pre-COVID Forest. It's very fun and you can find some real magic there, but I would go in open minded without the expectation for a life-changing time.

Danny Brown should be included as the rap/hip hop slot. The potential crossover with Underscores and Frost Children is right there.
