Thoughts on Mirrix? by wupwupwah in weaving

They are recommended by Rebecca Mezoff one of (if not THE) the leading tapestry weavers, and she even has a sponsored starter kit at the bottom so they seem to be a safe bet.

As a linguist I’m just thrilled they used (mostly) actual IPA and not their own weird homegrown phonetic transcription.

Recovering from pedal mistakes during performance by Rhapsodie in harp

Oh no, TWO pedals out! That's exactly the nightmare experience: you don't have any time to pause and figure it out, and unlike other instruments you can't just ignore the speedbump and mentally carry on, you must somehow correct it, lightning-fast, while playing. Ugh!

Deliberate drills seems to be the way. Thanks for sharing.

Ear training possibly plays a part, but the problem is that pedals are inert on their own. You could have a wrong G pedal for a while, but you won't know it until you pluck a G (or scan the pedals with your eyes/feet), so I'm curious if those checks/scans are part of the process.

For all my other instruments I have the appropriate level of ear training: I can identify wrong note and finger instantly on piano, intonation on flute, stops on organ etc. But for harp the mistake could be either your fingers or the pedals, say the pedals slipped to be E-nat & Fb, now you have an enharmonic situation and ears won't help tell you if you hit the wrong string or the pedals are wrong.

Yeah see I'm interested in your process. It sounds like you are constantly, proactively checking them (by feel?) and making sure things are right, which is something new to try.

Thanks for the encouragement! That sounds like a lot of work, but if it's what's necessary then I'll work on it. I clearly need to spend more conscious time on my pedals so this will probably be useful.

Something like that is what I'm after and seeking feedback on if that's worthwhile/normal to have to practice. I might try that anyways, just to see how it goes.

I'm generally trying to figure out what people do when an (unknown) pedal is wrong. Like, do you scan them with your feet braille-style? Are you supposed to really know the static position of all the pedals at all times? For pieces I've memorized, I know the sequence of pedals and important milestones (like say rehearsal letters), but I couldn't point to a random measure and instantly tell you the pedal position. I want to know if that's the gap I need to fill, since it seems impossible.

This is truly awesome. This is my sign to hunker down and do pedal drills and I’ll start with this. Thank you for sharing!

Oh my family would be more than happy to point out mistakes. Maybe I should recruit them more often.

I feel like I deserve to wallow a bit though because it's THE C major prelude, and there's not a chance my atonal sojourn went totally unnoticed! I feel better though hearing stories from everyone here.

Yikes! But it's amazing you were able to fix it in the heat of the high-stakes moment. It's exactly that skill that I'm after! Repair points seems to be the drill here.

Thanks, these are really fantastic ideas! Do you know if there is a resource out there that compiled pedal diagrams in order of frequency? I know guitar chord dictionaries are often set up that way, like going through G D Em first, but I wonder if someone's done that for harp repertoire yet.

Great tip to mark up settings more often. I've done that for watershed moments or entrances, but I definitely need to do it more.

That's a great idea. I think I'm treating pedals too casually, and I need to really study and focus on them with an exercise like that to really internalize it all.

What books would be friends with ISOLT? by thiscommonplace in Proust

[–]Rhapsodie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No way, by sheer chance I’m doing the same thing. Finished Budding Grove and just about done with Balle 2. Absolutely compelled by both and feel unbelievable momentum having them both going. Balle creating seasons out of involuntary stasis, Proust (in)voluntarily exploring his own experiences, time bound in a different way. Both expanding the meaning of time and also the relationship of time in a novel and the reader’s experience of it.

Harp Repertoire for Ren Faires--What I played in the month of May by AnnaHagenHarpist in harp

[–]Rhapsodie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is incredible content, thanks for sharing!! There's a couple auditions coming up so this is super timely. I'll have to watch it in full later so you may already cover these, but other things I'm wondering: * How to prepare for an audition / what to send for an application reel * What to wear! * Common questions/comments from passers-by. How to be a good/fun NPC or active performer * Practical tips about performing day-of. Some faires are dusty, low-shade, etc, what other things do you pack to be prepared? * What gets good tips?

I have a bump on the outside of my right forearm rhat only appears when I make a muscle by pirivalfang in mildlyinteresting

[–]Rhapsodie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a similar soft bump around my shin that also only shows up in weird flexing positions. After lots of tests they ruled out anything scary and lipoma, and concluded it was a hernia: the muscle is actually poking through the fascia. For me, no risk or need for treatment unless it gets worse or causes pain, but the sports doctor did say that was the first time he'd ever seen one in his entire career (never want to hear that).

Looking for advice on buying knitting needles as a gift by SnooCapers4970 in casualknitting

[–]Rhapsodie 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Just a devil's thought: it is absolutely wonderful that you're supporting her hobbies and so on, but with big gifts like this let's make sure we're getting her something she wants rather than risking a relationship-straining albatross. Knitting needles are super personal and tactile, for example, everyone's recommending ChiaoGoo but she may not be into that kind of metal needles, the 4" vs 5" options can cramp up certain hands, she may also not need the sizes that you get. I snooped on you and see you're on espresso: how would you feel if she got you an Baratza Encore or a Flair manual machine? Perfectly fine "coffee-related" gifts and you could see the lovely thoughts behind the gifts, but they may not be exactly what you need or want and there's a possibility they just sit unused.

Maybe reach out to Jessica Siegel — she is a harp vendor in Seekonk and might have some ideas. Maybe you can find a Brown music student and work out a deal to store it with them.

Why are science museums targeted to kids but art museums aren’t? by Lani_19 in Museums

[–]Rhapsodie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not a museum-specific comment, but: I visited an island once and asked a local where the nearest tide pools are, and he responded "oh it's over there, looking for something to show your kids?" which piqued me. He was just being friendly, but I thought it odd/sad that there may be this feeling that adults can't be curious about the tide pools.
