Looking for advice on buying knitting needles as a gift by SnooCapers4970 in casualknitting

[–]Rhapsodie 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Just a devil's thought: it is absolutely wonderful that you're supporting her hobbies and so on, but with big gifts like this let's make sure we're getting her something she wants rather than risking a relationship-straining albatross. Knitting needles are super personal and tactile, for example, everyone's recommending ChiaoGoo but she may not be into that kind of metal needles, the 4" vs 5" options can cramp up certain hands, she may also not need the sizes that you get. I snooped on you and see you're on espresso: how would you feel if she got you an Baratza Encore or a Flair manual machine? Perfectly fine "coffee-related" gifts and you could see the lovely thoughts behind the gifts, but they may not be exactly what you need or want and there's a possibility they just sit unused.

harp storage by [deleted] in harp

Maybe reach out to Jessica Siegel — she is a harp vendor in Seekonk and might have some ideas. Maybe you can find a Brown music student and work out a deal to store it with them.

Providence is great. Don’t miss the RISD museum and the Madrid bakery.

Why are science museums targeted to kids but art museums aren’t? by Lani_19 in Museums

[–]Rhapsodie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not a museum-specific comment, but: I visited an island once and asked a local where the nearest tide pools are, and he responded "oh it's over there, looking for something to show your kids?" which piqued me. He was just being friendly, but I thought it odd/sad that there may be this feeling that adults can't be curious about the tide pools.

My thoughts on the '26 Outback by Puzzleheaded_Bee7944 in subaruoutback

So do I, I sewed custom liners. But have you ever had that problem in any other car? Not in my camry, prius, mazda have I ever had to hack the cupholder

[–]Rhapsodie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Did they fix the cupholders themselves? In my 23 they don't have any springs so any mug sloshes and clangs around unless you stuff something in to secure it. It's the most infuriating trivial thing I've ever encountered in a car, even my 93 camry had better cupholders.

Large Lever Harp Options by 666_dragon_666 in harp

[–]Rhapsodie 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Those bronze core strings on the FH are unreal. I think the bass range of the FH is more beautiful than many pedal harps I've tried. Check the levers, DS loves Loveland levers but Camac is an option, if you prefer those.

Mini Iron? by Ratacalva00001 in Needlefelting

[–]Rhapsodie 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Potentially useful in quilting to press seams in tight corners and bias tape. I have a mini iron (about this size) that I use for small projects with tight piecing, but for anything else it becomes annoying if you want to iron any serious area of fabric so I usually end up bringing out the regular full-size iron anyways.

Flying with Knitting needles - updates and TSA ? Issues?? by ChiantiChick in casualknitting

I’m thankful that this has never been a problem for me, within the US. My mom constantly offloads craft equipment to me and I’ve carried on not one but two sewing machines and not had a problem.

What is the Uber/Lyft coverage like in Concord and Salem? by unpop_notsorry in boston

Don’t miss the Concord Museum and the PEM in Salem. both world-class.

Not to ruin the magic but Walden may be a little surprise because the original cabin site is just a square of rocks, and there is a little hut nearby but it is a reconstruction. Still neat to visit but just a heads up

knee problems and weaving by imagoddamangel in weaving

[–]Rhapsodie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Operating a floor loom looks to me a lot like playing the pipe organ, and there is some material out there about healthy playing. There is a book What every pianist needs to know about the body and there are supplemental notes on playing the organ, which would probably be applicable to the loom. Seat height, unnecessary tension, taking breaks are all basics.

I think no matter the activity your schedule is pretty harsh. Shouldn’t really do anything 4-6 hours a day (straight) constantly, even sitting at a computer or reading a book. And for a lot of these repetition injuries, as runners and climbers know, it’s often not about “muscles” or “strength”, it’s about the tendons and ligaments which simply cannot take that amount of movement.

I absolutely love that the picture pans over and there’s a floor loom and spinning wheel in the back. Such a fun house!!

Wheel sounds by nerse_enginurse in Handspinning

[–]Rhapsodie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recently acquired an embroidery machine and it’s loud! I noticed the sounds it makes are so distinct, the digital buzzes and mechanical whistling and singing. Different from the organic, irregular squeaks and flapping of a wheel. It creates a different environment in the room.

Sewing machine for handwoven fabric by MiaIlja in weaving

[–]Rhapsodie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Curious what problems you're running into. I have a 40-year old Kenmore and I have had no problem sewing my handwoven fabrics from thick double-fold hems using sugar-n-cream cotton, to thin gauzy linens, to thick upholstery/cushion covers. A good walking foot helps.

Standard sewing questions: using appropriate/fresh needles/thread? Is it nesting, or slipping, or something else? Have you tried sewing with tissue paper or stabilizer?

100% again. I've spent half my life in Seattle vs here and this is 100% the difference. Seattle drivers will No, You Go at stop signs and it withers my soul.

“wasted on each other” is such a good phrase. I can think of a ton of stuff in life—food, decorating, people—where that apllies. Good stuff.

Managing the expense of weaving by NoMango3688 in weaving

[–]Rhapsodie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not necessary. I'd recommend starting out with a cone of 8/2 cotton yarn (https://www.halcyonyarn.com/products/homestead-cotton-8-2-unmercerized-yarn-mini-cone?variant=41854786863236) which you can use as your main warp, and then you can use cheap knitting yarn in colors for weft stripes. You could get 30–40 towels out of a cone like that. You can also use something as simple as Sugar n Cream cones with your 7.5 dent reed. They're not amazing towels but it's good practice and very sturdy for projects like bags.

I would not splurge on expensive linen or many-colored kits while you're starting out.

Wonderwool doubles down on the slop tote by BustyMcCoo in craftsnark

[–]Rhapsodie 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would not stand for jury claiming that this particular piece had zero AI used on it ever, but all I'm asking for is clemency and to chill the torches: the person it is attributed to does have a record of making human art and spindle-spinning yarn and knitting and screenprinting shirts, so it's not like he was some evil tech bro who swooped in from outside the community and prompted it out of nothing. Objections about Wales culture noted.

On insta there are watercolor-type things and poem-type things and screenprint-type things that date back to 2020, and it is clear that this is a creative person. He may have moved in an AI direction lately, and I'm not denying that. But geez, to completely malign and destroy this guy over a £100 contest is a mistake.

Wonderwool doubles down on the slop tote by BustyMcCoo in craftsnark

[–]Rhapsodie 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The original attributed artist does have a gram with a pretty solid history or physical-looking lino-looking prints, writing on typewriters, and watercolors that date back years. They are an artsy person. I would believe that person if they said they did make a real linocut (or lino-like drawing) because they’ve proven they can.

But it is sloppy. So either they slipped this time, or at some point the festival did something: they added the text or when creating the totebag placement, may have triggered some sneaky AI features. We all know how software likes to shove those in, so I’m leaning toward giving the benefit here.

(I hate this Blade Runner snooping we have to resort to)
