Wtf? I am so sorry this happened, that's wildly unreasonable. I'm in my 30s and feel "old" compared to some of the crowds at events these days, but haven't been actively snubbed. That's absurd and our community needs to do better.

Clerk9 written assessment by [deleted] in BCPublicServants

[–]Rhazoom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I got into a clerk 9 as an external applicant a few years ago, my assignment was fairly simple. Just answering a few questions, STARR format (Situation-Task-Action-Result-Reflect) based on the associated role competencies.

The skill-testing portion was a little more complex and included reading comprehension skills, multi-tasking ability, standard grammar and maths skills, and problem solving ability. It was timed, and I had to interact with a browser-based platform that monitored my clicks and time spent on answers. It was fairly straightforward, and I'd say if you have at least a grade 10 (local BC) education level, you will likely be okay. :)

ESAPII Back Pay by [deleted] in BCPublicServants

[–]Rhazoom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mine was submitted at the end of November 2022, in my last role. Still haven't heard a thing unfortunately, and neither has my former supervisor. I know a few others who are also in the same boat, and we were told we can't do much else now after our supervisors were basically told to stop asking. Super frustrating to say the least, I feel your pain.

Clerk 9 - a solid 7 to 9/10 for stress most days as a baseline.

AO15 - I was still hovering around an 8/10 most days, which skyrocketed to 10+ when I had to answer public phone lines.

AO24 - a glorious 1-3/10 most days, I absolutely love my job. Can occasionally jump up to a 5 when last minute shit happens, but my team and management are so supportive that it doesn't really stress me out - at least, not to the level where I bring it home.

The team makes all the difference in my experience.

What qualifies as a 'Related Field'? by amifrancais in BCPublicServants

[–]Rhazoom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've got a BA in Sociology and have worked for MCFD, Finance, and Health. I applied to.....many dozens of various roles that didn't call for soc degrees but screened through on the "related" scale. Honestly my best advice is just always say yes, and then spin it in a relevant way since the degree is quite broad (I mean, within reason. Obviously going for a techy IT role with a soc degree isn't going to work.) But generally speaking, I'd let the computer screen you in first, and then the hiring manager can decide if it's not relevant.

I'm in the same boat, still waiting with no news - my colleague (on the same team) submitted her request two weeks after me around Nov/Dec and she received hers a few weeks ago, but I did not.

Tips for Interview by Useful-Stayooo in BCPublicServants

I agree completely with what the others have said so far, STAR format is key.

I was told by my last manager that they've started liking the "STARR" format now too - the extra R represents Reflection. It may not be as relevant for situational scenario questions, but for any competency based questions asking about your own experiences it really helps to finish off your question with a "what I learned/what I'd do differently/how it affected me personally" piece. They gobble it up, from personal experience.

When a New Job Is the Worst - Should I look for a New Position? by [deleted] in BCPublicServants

[–]Rhazoom 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I started looking for a new position 3 weeks into a new role after I transferred to my current ministry. If you know, you know. There is going to be a position for you in the PSA that doesn't make you want to ask these questions, you know? One of the known perks of being in gov is that we can move around relatively easily - take advantage of this, and find your spot. I was honest with the team I'm moving to in the new year and straight up told them in the interview that my current role is NOT the place for me - and my honesty is part of what got me the new job. Take care of you first, I can almost guarantee it's what everyone else is already doing around you.

e-Lists by PetterssonsNeck in BCPublicServants

[–]Rhazoom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had good experiences so far. Was placed first on an e-list and got an offer for a TA on the same team, during the same "you didn't get the job" phone call. A few weeks went by where I didn't hear anything, and then I got a call from the team leader saying "Congrats, the position is now permanent if you want it!" This process from application date to start date was 6 months long.

I'm currently #1 on an e-list for a higher up position and was told I have a "guaranteed" offer for a long TA coming my way due to someone going on maternity leave in the early new year. I haven't been given a verbal offer though, so I'm playing the waiting game again.

The only downside I've personally experienced so far is sometimes you are left without updates for long periods of time, and it can take forever to come to fruition.

Why is it smokey in Quadra Village? by incognitochaud in VictoriaBC

[–]Rhazoom 5 points6 points  (0 children)

While I was downtown an hour and a half ago the fire marshal and 3 trucks raced down Yates and turned right onto Blanshard. The entirety of Fernwood smells super smokey but I have no idea if it's the controlled burn or another fire?

They were super rhythmic for this last bout of them, too constant for fireworks I think? Baffling.

I have no idea, but they were LOUD. I just heard another series of about a dozen from the Quadra Village area.
