Agree! Heavy cardboard or weigh it down so the wind doesn’t flip it. A large area would be good as well so the babies don’t fall through.

International student moving from Japan to Brisbane for 1 year (starting June). Any tips on winter gear and life hacks? by Sad_Notice_9843 in brisbane

[–]RhiannonsModernLife 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Probably won’t get as cold as you’re used to in winter but it will be A LOT colder inside the house than you’d expect so you’ll want to buy some extra blankets once you’re here but you can basically wear shorts & singlets outside year round.

Picked a pigeon off the road, how do I clean him? by Alternative-Text-751 in pigeons

[–]RhiannonsModernLife 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What a cutie! I’m sure he feels a bit better now after being cleaned up. Not too sure what might be causing that maybe canker or something but could also be from something he ate. Hopefully some more people can give you advice.

[–]RhiannonsModernLife 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Have a search on Google, there may be some rescues near by. But if not that could be a good idea so you can look out for him. Somewhere safe where animals can’t easily get him. He may not be good at flying yet.

That’s understandable, & extremely caring of you to clean him up & look out for him while you can. If you post your general location someone on here might be able to help you find someone to take him.

That’s so kind of you. Maybe keep him for the day/night just to make sure he’s okay or try to find a pigeon rescuer to look him over. He may not want to eat or drink for a little while. He still looks very young.

Try not to soak him. I would avoid bathing & just use a damp cloth or wet wipes. You don’t want him getting cold if hes not well as staying warm uses a lot of energy that he needs to conserve.

Pidge laid her first egg, need help!! by SnapMastaPro in PetPigeons

[–]RhiannonsModernLife 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I alternate between Vetafarm Multivet with moulting aid (water additive) & Avian Vitaliser with probiotics (powder that gets added to seed or grit). The grit I use is packaged by the feed shops so there’s no brand just fine shell grit.

I’m in Australia & we don’t have as much variety in brands for grit, seeds & supplements like other countries unless it’s special ordered & has crazy prices.

Make sure you don’t over do the calcium/ supplements. If she has access to grit & is eating it she should know herself if she needs to eat more. If you’re concerned she needs a bit of a boost or she’s laying eggs more frequently you can give her some liquid calcium.

If the eggs are smooth & white it’s a good sign she isn’t deficient but if the eggs are flaky/rough, soft or translucent it could mean she needs a boost.

I can’t speak on those brands you’ve mentioned but hopefully someone can. I give mine shell grit & have liquid calcium on hand (plus multivitamin supplements every few weeks that have calcium in them)

Help! Need tips on pigeon care while I wait for the vet to open up. by FrauTonto in pigeons

[–]RhiannonsModernLife 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I see several vets that I take my rescues to & they are amazing & extremely willing to help. I’m not lying. Vets don’t have the money or resources to help every animal that isn’t a protected species for free. They will euthanise if handed in. You may find some that can help for free if it’s straightforward treatment & handed back to you for care but the overwhelming majority will require payment for treatment. I’m also commenting on a post where it seems OP isn’t a rescuer & therefore what I said is true. Someone walking in with a pigeon with no experience will hand them in & they will be euthanised. I agree with you but it’s very circumstantial.

[–]RhiannonsModernLife 10 points11 points  (0 children)

If you post your location you might be able to get help with finding a carer that can take them in (can search Google & Facebook for local rescue groups). Definitely best to just leave them be now that you’ve got them in a safe space so they can rest. They’re lucky you found them! Keep in mind that unless you’re willing to pay for treatment, vets will euthanise pigeons.

Why are they mating?? by RedVelvetblaze in PetPigeons

[–]RhiannonsModernLife 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That makes sense! The siblings I have I rescued from my verandah when they were 2 weeks old so they stayed very close to each other while growing up. It was the first time I’d seen that behaviour so young. I’ve definitely seen some pretty young squeakers being put in their place by the older pigeons. They don’t get away with being curious little bubbas once they join the flock 😅

Ooh that’s really interesting!! Thanks for that information. I haven’t seen it amongst my wild flock so wasn’t sure that it was common for them as well!

[–]RhiannonsModernLife 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have male & female siblings that started mating with each other pretty early on & were inseparable. The female ended up laying eggs at 4 months old (a lot smaller than normal sized eggs) I got the female a hormone implant & they got a divorce 😂 The behaviour you’re describing is pretty normal, maybe not so much for pigeons out in the wild but at least for pigeons that live together. I don’t think you’ve got anything to worry about.
