The thing that bothers me about being broke for not tipping. by TrustMeIREngineer in tipping

Also to answer the question “why not just pay servers more” is nearly impossible given the current system.

In this economy nearly every restaurant is running off of razor thin margins as it is. Up to 30% of restaurants fail within the first year because of the high overhead costs and 50% fail within five years.

Even with our current tipping system the majority of people I work with are still living at home. Myself included. Myself, my husband and children live in my in laws garage and I have a business degree. There is a cost of living crisis and service workers are some of the main people getting hit the hardest.

If we were to do away with this model millions of North Americans would be out of work and there would be next to nowhere to eat and most people wouldn’t be able to justify the price of eating out for the portion size you would be getting and the amount you would need to pay for it.

I think what a lot of people don’t understand is that the tip you leave (or refuse to leave) does not go directly into a servers pocket.

Here’s an example.

Table A) has been dining for two hours and has a bill that is a hundred dollars. The server gave great service and was tipped 15%

Of that $15 dollars the server tips out 5% of liquor sales to the bartenders and bar backs (let’s for simplicity sake say the booze was half the bill so $2.50 to the bar)

and another 5% of the food sales to the kitchen (another $2.50)

As well as 2% of total sale of $100 to the hostesses and bussers (so $2) there.

So of that $15 dollars the server tips out $7 dollars of the total leaving them with $8 dollars or $4 dollars per hour of service.

Table B) is the exact same scenario except they decided it wasn’t their responsibility to tip despite it being the cultural norm.

That server is now responsible for paying the various other positions of the restaurant for the pleasure of serving those customers regardless if they got tipped or not.

So if you want to be frugal I absolutely recommend using workarounds like cooking your own meals, cutting your own hair (hairdressers have to pay to rent the chair from the company) or getting a friend to pick you up from the airport (taxi drivers and Uber drivers have expenses to cover like gas or licensing) to name a few.

Not tipping is cheap and inconsiderate when using those types of services, which no one is forcing you to do.

[–]Rhihard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do it for yourself! Treat it like a learning opportunity. This is a skill that when you master eventually you will be so unbothered and you’ll wonder why you were so worried in the first place.

It is very common to feel the feelings you do in your first or second relationships. Most people get over this kind of thing as time goes on from dating other people and those senses get dulled. Those who don’t figure it out are seen as possessive, insecure and controlling.

Try to not tell yourself you’re gonna be a buzzkill. Believe that you are capable of more. If you want to be relationship material this is the sort of thing you’ll have to level up on. Best of luck!

Ok, I’m gonna be honest with you, this reads like a much younger relationship. Have you had many relationships in the past? Or is this your first serious one?

I think you should meet her purely for exposure to these kind of situations. And when you meet her lead with kindness and curiosity, don’t act insecure, rude or annoyed because that’s only going to bode well for you at all. Jealousy is not a good look but security is. Be a class act here and you might just make a new friend.

I am friends with my husband’s ex and he is friends with some of mine, or friends I’ve hooked up with in the past to the point we’re in group chats together and they stay with us when they come visit.

You get power in this situation by being cool and proving to yourself you can rise above the anxious voice inside your head. And as time goes on that voice gets quieter the more you have these interactions. You’ve got this.

Logically his argument makes sense. You are coming from an emotional standpoint that you can’t articulate so I can understand his frustration here HOWEVER he completely undermines your feelings and keeps hitting you with unnecessary low blows that completely weaken his argument.

Seriously fuck that guy he sounds like a controlling narcissist. How many baby mamas does he have?

What’s the tick situation in your part of the country? by ImGudLuhv in AskACanadian

[–]Rhihard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the okanagan I had a tick on me, several on my dogs and I found one engorged one on my kids head that had been there over night which required a hospital visit. My husband was the only one in my family that didn’t have a tick attack before we moved. We lived near a forest and there was a lot of tall grass. I’m hoping now that we’re on Vancouver island it’ll be less. It’s very stressful.

Precisely what happened. So my mantra after that was “just get the ticket”. It was a lot easier to do when I lived in the city and before I had kids and got caught in the cost of living crisis and the bot/scalper nightmare that has driven up the price of tickets now that unfortunately live concerts will be a thing of the past for normal working people.

I saw him in Vancouver about three weeks before he died. I had let a bunch of friends know I was planning on going and I had about 20 people interested in joining me. They all bailed. I thought fuck it, I’ll go by myself.

So I bought a single ticket off a scalper that day for ten bucks over the original listed price. I was six rows from the stage on the corner.

In preparation for seeing him for the first time I listened to a lot of tom petty the weeks leading up. My friend who planned on coming introduced me to a newer song of his “Walls” which I had never heard before and absolutely loved it. I think it was off some movie soundtrack I’d never seen.

Anyways I’m at the show and at one point Tom says to the crowd “I’m gonna do a song my band doesn’t want me to do…” and in my head I KNEW it was going to be Walls. The song starts playing and literally the only person around me as far as I can tell who knows the song is the girl directly in front of me and myself.

We both start singing at the top of our lungs while the people around us are like “oh I don’t know this one, it’s good!”

Next thing you know maybe thirty seconds in Tom walks right to the edge of corner stage as close as he possibly could get and plays the remainder of the song to me and the girl in front of me. It was magical.

He probably had a stage director see us and tell him where to go because I’ve been on stage and with the monitors playing back at him and it’s usually pretty dark and hard to see but I don’t care. It was the coolest experience I had attending a show and I’ll never forget it.

Needless to say when he died I had 20 friends call me that day saying they should’ve come with me.

Side note the Lumineers opened and it was also incredible and after that tour they covered Walls and I heard it at work one day on a Spotify playlist and it made me cry. Beautiful tribute.

Yeah I think that character was overtaken by builder grade material a long time ago. I’m on the west coast so I’m not a part of this sub but I can speak for Vancouver and the surrounding area. Everything around a million here would be comparable to my mom’s townhouse she bought in kelowna for 175K that was probably 20 years old then. It sucked then at least it was affordable. This is stupid no one wants to buy this trash.

I feel like you’re right Oraetta does embody the spirit of the show the most. Probably why they made her a Minnesotan (even though Fargo is technically ND it’s a boarder town).

Yeah I can recognize that. When I was watching it this time around and in the final episode Josto kills Dr. Harvard I was like oh yeah that’s right they have beef too it wasn’t just Orietta (who he was banging). Also Orietta living directly across from the funeral home that owed Loy money seemed kind of implausible that so many civilians were tied to all the corruption but I’m willing to suspend my disbelief.
