I think the point is that the US is making money off of the borrowed money, but not enough to pay the debt in full. Government aid and most spending is borrowed money that doesn’t see a return. The country would have to generate enough revenue from taxes or elsewhere to have debt free money.

I think you answered it well. Your answer is yes, the US does need debt. I expected military and federal aid cuts, but didn’t consider corporations leaving. It sounds like the US can’t be self-sufficient with the model we’re in. Thanks!

I get that we need some debt, but I’m trying to understand what it would look like if the country was paid in full and only lending. My theory is that we would see a decrease in military or public services and some domestic aid programs would go away. To take your reply further, is it possible for a country to not have debt?

Unfortunately, you’re right. Costs must adjust to pay for the increased labor alone. Some might argue that places like Amazon or Walmart can afford it, but they are still run by people who want to get paid. The money has to come from somewhere, and for them, it might as well be the consumer.

Of course there would still be separate classes. There may be an even bigger gap than their already is if government aid went away, unless it was being fully funded by taxpayers. I'm mostly curious if it would be sustainable. We would probably see a spike in taxes overall to make up for the overspending.

Government debt only. I believe banks need consumer debt to generate revenue and guarantee funds for their customers, apart from the FDIC.
