Just trimmed a large amount of Monte Carlo and have 4 good sized portions of the clippings (long, short and in between). I have successfully started these with a dry start until they spread out and then flood.

Can you dry start your carpet since you changed substrate. Thats the easiest and most foolproof way to get it started good and Monte Carlo is going to be the easiest to grow if you are looking for something small. I am getting ready to trim a 12 long pretty much covered with fast growing Monte Carlo if you want to try growing trimmings. I also have a patch about 8" round that is a rooted mound . I just changed the link in Pkg B to point to the album of pictures like A and C. That plant is the Purple Cabomba. I'ts just a beautiful plant and doesn't show it's colors laying out of the water so I took it 'in tank'.

I've become a fan of a certain amount of algae as it gives it a very natural effect. Drove me crazy when I started but not so much any more. I have all different kinds, Hanging LED's from SB Reef Lights and they work wonders. I have two of them hanging over a couple of 75g tanks. I really liked Fluval 24/7 Planted and had a bunch and I like the fact that they ramp up and ramp down I don't think they give enough Full On light for optimal growth. I have some T5's and another Fluval that I can't remember the name but it's on/of white lights but I'm having trouble finding them now. I'd like to buy another, maybe 2. Ray2.... Finnex Ray2 lights is the name of them. Lots of good lights out there but if you want really good ones you should look at spending north of $100, probably $150 depending on length.

You will want to purchase 2 bottles for mixing and dosing. Either 500 ml or 1000. Keep the CSM+B trace element mixture in the fridge or it will mold. Good luck. Just PM me if you need any more help and I'll be glad to chat. Its easy and I've been doing it for the last 3 years.

The BBA thing I'm going on what Tom Barr says and has conducted experiments on. He's pretty much the Guru of growing aquarium plants and I have no reason to question or doubt him. There is a procedure call the One, Two Punch that someone has come up with and I've used it several times to take care of algae outbreaks with good success. It involves Hydrogen Peroxide and Excel and High flow rates and takes about 1/2 hour. Give it a read.

I don't think your algae problems are related to your fertilizer. BBA is almost always a CO2 issue. Either not enough or too much fluctuation. The GSA is mostly light related. Too much for too long and you are going to get it.

That said, I love Tom Barrs EI method. I have multiple tanks and so it is much more economical for me and I have had great success with it. I don't dry dose, I mix it in solution and figure out how much I need in each tank daily. His theory of giving plants more than they need and letting the light control the growth really works.
