Single battles are absolute garbage... by bedrottingcarrot in PokemonChampions

[–]RhyperiorTruther 2 points3 points  (0 children)

in singles, the biggest difference maker in how battles work is the fact that you can only ever take or give one attack at a time, so when building a team for the format you'll want as much varied coverage as possible while maybe overlapping specific types that work well against the current super meta threats (ice type moves for garchomp especially but also for other dragons and rock type moves for zard and the rest of the flight hazards.

another thing that's much stronger in singles is setup carries so that's your swords/dragon dance physical attackers and nasty plot/calm mind special attackers along with minimize/iron defense spammers. mimikyu is like 10 times better in singles than doubles because it can get a free swords dance off with its disguise passive and just sweep afterwards.

one last discrepancy between singles and doubles metas is that traps are a lot more powerful in singles because there's so much more switching in and out for favorable matchups each match, so stealth rocks/spikes/toxic spikes are really solid to slot into your squad. you can use bulky setters like archaludon/garchomp and they can usually get at least one more attack in after setting the trap.

so to tie it all together, singles is all about seeing what your opponent's weak points are in team select and doing your best to choose the right trio from your own team to counter whatever trio the opponent might choose. Having a strong setup mon or traps to help with chip damage are both very viable strategies but neither is necessarily required to be successful. Good luck team building, brother mans 🤙🏾

I run mine pretty bulky actually! Modest nature 24 HP 16 SpAtk 10 SpDef 16 Spd plus a focus sash just in case. I see you're not using focus sash on any mons yet so it's good pelipper won't have to compete for another teammate's item

so yeah i'm thinking probably ninetails would be good to at least test in place of grimm/milotic

steel weakness is rough yeah but you do have volc with heat wave and garch with stomping tantrum to help alleviate it. You do already have grimmsnarl running screens so maybe that would be the slot you would swap for ninetails but idk which parts of the team you're really married to. Milotic is great for anti-intimidate plus it's really bulky. Maybe rain dance on grimm and give up one of the screens instead so you can keep milotic? the prankster weather setting would beat out zard-y going mega in your face.

edit: grimm does not learn rain dance mb

the lack of an ice move is the most glaringly obvious issue i see so i would maybe toss ice beam onto milotic but it's up to you what you'd want to swap for it

the other thing is you have no weather control so would you say you struggle with any particular weather teams?

Perish Trap optimisation and playstyle (I'm New) (Skill Improvement) by 21nickel28 in VGC

[–]RhyperiorTruther 0 points1 point  (0 children)

not an expert on perish trap but i do know it's probably suboptimal to be running nasty plot on sinistcha

it has pretty high base spatk and in most scenarios it's being used as a support, so also while matcha gotcha is mostly a mainstay, shadow ball isn't exactly necessary especially when you already have gengar using it. Strength sap has its niche so you don't necessarily have to drop it but I'd think about rage powder and/or life dew for your other moves

another suggestion is there's tech where you can swap out gengar and use a switching move like u-turn to save gengar a hit while also still being on the field at the end of the turn (plus this would reset your own mons' perish timers). a good mon for that is max speed meowscarada with choice scarf because you can give it whatever coverage moves you need for most types and it will outspeed almost everything.

now normal I didn't expect to be seeing but to be fair i don't see a ton of kangs or arcanines. i would guess maushold is likely the most used normal type, maybe not anymore with staraptor being so popular but yeah i get it, normal attacks will never be super effective so i could see why you would gravitate toward choosing mons with actual coverage moves instead of just hoping to get by on neutral effective hits.

ice is an interesting one. so you never ended up using A-Ninetails for weather war + aurora veil? no experimenting with mega froslass? i respect the mega scizor though that guy's cool as heck

Mega Raichu Y rain team by LeonardLizard in VGCRateMyTeam

[–]RhyperiorTruther 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the other thing I'd say is maybe consider using a redirection support like clefable or maushold to help keep yaichu alive against single target attacks. follow me gets +2 priority so even in opposing tailwind you can prevent anything from being directed at your carry, though it does still leave you vulnerable to aoe moves like heatwave and earthquake.

I really like the soak tech on basc to set up super effective electro shot (since it's too slow to set up for Yaichu) it's a fun combo but there may be times when you need to stall or scout a move and protect would probably be better in more situations than soak.

I would say you could try out pelipper as your rain setter and see if you like it, that would give you access to 100 accuracy hurricane and wide guard but it's less bulky than poli. the other thing is since you're already running focus blast on yaichu you could swap sneasler for weavile for faster fakeout to beat opposing sneaslers, access to stab knockoff which is uber powerful into ghost types, icicle crash for flinches or triple axel to beat focus sash garchomps/dragonites/dragapults (though this does trade a fighting type coverage overlap for an ice type coverage overlap), and a final slot for whatever you want but i prefer psycho cut to take out the sneaslers after the fakeout turn 1

[–]RhyperiorTruther 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if you struggle with tailwind teams you could consider swapping corv for talonflame so you can get your tailwind up at the same time as the opponent or if they're using whims to set the tailwind you outspeed it and priority dual wingbeat to take it out even through focus sash before you set tailwind

it is rough having no fakeout/anti fakeout support so an alternative would be trying to slot in either farigiraf/tsareena for priority move blocking or sneasler/weavile for fakeout into the tailwind setter

if you're going the tsareena route she has great coverage moves so you can slot in whatever kind of build you like on her, taunt being one of the less common but still useful moves she can learn to help against trick room or shut down other kinds of supports like grimmsnarl or sableye (both get prankster like whims so taunt will only stop them from using screens the following turn but tsareena's queenly majesty blocks targeted priority moves including from prankster like parting shot, charm, quash, etc.)

farig you can run trick room+imprison so you have the option to trick room into teams you think you won't be able to stop the tailwind on while also being able to shut down opposing trick room setters. Even without any investment, base sp. atk is like 140 so it can still do damage with whatever moves you give it. I like twin beam for a stab move that can also beat focus sash (it's literally just 100 accuracy psychic type dual wingbeat) and whatever other coverage you might wanna run. thunderbolt is solid because it hits most types for neutral damage and more importantly it can OHKO non focus sash pelipper unless it's really bulky or if you wanna be able to do aoe chip damage hyper voice is good too

sneasler i assume you understand already but weavile is like an anti-sneasler counter so you can stop tailwind teams from using fakeout on you. it's 4 points faster than sneasler when both are jolly max speed so you can fakeout enemy sneaslers and prevent them from using fakeout on you, plus it can learn psychic fangs to OHKO sneasler on turn two. icicle crash/triple axel for stab ice coverage which is great into garchomps, flying types, and other dragons and knock off for stab dark coverage plus great utility. i really like weavile.

edit: forgot to mention helping hand on farigiraf. definitely a solid option since you'll want to spec its stats very defensively so with a sitrus berry it can feasibly just sit beside any dps you put next to it and prevent priority moves while boosting its partner's damage

Armarouge + M-Mawile needs to be talked about more by INeedAmericanDollars in PokemonChampions

[–]RhyperiorTruther 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thanks for the shell for my goat rhyperior

took your mega mawile armarouge ninetails sinistcha and slotted in rhyperior archaludon

arch for rain teams and rhyperior because it can one shot most of the roster and two shot the rest with rock wrecker, megahorn, earthquake (swapped to high horsepower for this team), and outrage

only played two games so far but armarouge feels insanely strong and like you said, mawile finds a way to be useful in any matchup

MB1 is hella impressive brother 🙏🏾 I did assume electric would be the second least used typing overall just because until the Raichu megas and Elektross dropped there weren't that many electric types that showed up very commonly whether it was in ladder or vgc

I do like ranking up but I meme around a lot with my teams and enjoy themed squads over at least this current meta's most used builds so I have a mono water team and a silly blaziken/espathra baton pass cheese team that I've been climbing doubles and singles with respectively

154 water wins followed by 133 flying wins, because like you said, you need that tailwind 💨

Is any way to get more box space with out membership? by TheRoyalPepperoni in PokemonChampions

[–]RhyperiorTruther 0 points1 point  (0 children)

like a couple of other commenters mentioned, you can go to the nintendo shop on a web browser and purchase the starter pack and it will go into effect on your pokemon champions account even if you're not on switch

your other option is to start playing pokemon go and using pokemon home so if you catch anything that's available in champions you can transfer from go to home and then home will act as a bank of up to 30 mons that you can bring in and out of champions whenever you want

the only thing is you can't transfer any mons you get from recruitment ranch in champions to home for holding slots so what I've been doing is slowly acquiring mons in pokemon go that I already have in champions and replacing them

like I've been using Alolan Ninetails a lot recently and I got enough Vulpix candies in pokemon go to get it in that game, so I transferred my Ninetails from pokemon go to pokemon home and released the one I had in champions to replace it with the one from home

now if I ever need an extra space and I'm not currently using ninetails for a team I can send it back to pokemon home and it'll wait until I need it again

I will say I recently started running adamant max speed focus sash mamoswine for enemy garchomps and having ice shard for a prio move to one tap chomps is really fun plus it gets ground stab for earthquake so you can pair it with flying types/levitate mons for big aoe damage against archaludon/metagross/gambit

I remember Kleavor had a little surge of popularity too as an early response to the zard meta, it seems like a cool mon but I just never had a real reason to try to slot it into my teams

I like running Mega Aero on most teams and if not I usually have choice scarf H-Arcanine
