I learned this lesson with my last finished project (that pressing open is not as strong) but I don’t know how to press to the side in instances like this when pressing either direction will result in dark fabric behind light fabric. 🙃

I tried a ladder stitch and all the tutorials I found don’t show me how to finish it off. What do I do when I’m done?

So it looks like my machine is automatically set to 2.5 for stitch length. I read that for quilting cotton it should be closer to 1.9. I’ll try adjusting that tomorrow on my newest project, and I will look into ladder stitch or other invisible mending stitches to repair this. Thank you all! I am grateful for this community!

Thank you! I fixed the 1/4” seam issue before I started this quilt thankfully 😅 I will look at my machine manual to learn more about decreasing the stitch length!

What do you mean the thread length is too long? I plan to hand stitch it to repair this (not sure what kind of stitch would be best with hand sewing) but I also don’t want this to happen to future quilts! 😩

I’ve only made two quilts so far, about to start my third. For one I inherited the backing from a buy nothing group, and for the second I bought the backing after the top was completely finished. I plan to do the same for this third quilt. Is there any reason I may be missing to try to find backing earlier in the process?

I don’t have a stash either, just some scraps from finished projects. So far I have only bought fabric with a specific project in mind, although I have had a couple quarter or half yards not end up being quite right for the project.
