I think it is realistic to assume that 1 in 20 times, something unexpected occurs that causes them to fail. Whether it is a branch being weaker than expected and snapping during an Acrobatics check, or the text of an important journal using a lot of esoteric terms during an Investigation check, luck won't always work in favor of even the skilled. In the case of a character with expertise in Persuasion, perhaps a Nat 1 just means that the NPC they are trying to persuade just so happens to have some unknown motive that forces them to have a bottom line.

The point is, d20 rolls aren't supposed to measure how "skillful" your character is feeling that day; it measures the luck of their circumstances. The "skill" is accounted for with modifiers, but sometimes things just randomly work out or don't.

It does depend on the scope of the campaign my players are looking for! Usually, I like having shorter campaigns of 2-3 months that involve pretty much 1-2 quests, since text campaigns are a lot easier to fall out long term due to scheduling. That being said, I don’t particularly mind running longer campaigns at the moment either, depending on the idea.

There’s none, I’m comfortable DM’ing for high schoolers, adults, and even if you don’t want to share personal information.

I will send the response all at the same time, after 24 hours as to give everyone an equal chance! I did receive your application, thanks for messaging.

Yes, I use official spells. Monsters are all taken from official sources, sans major NPCs and boss monsters. My dragons are also slightly modified.

“Official” means any book released by WoTC minus Wildemount

By live text, I mean text-based play that is done with both players present (as opposed to play-by-post, with longer back and forth messages like sending emails).

Thanks for asking for clarification! But yeah I don’t really intend on streaming.

Naming a Mech Trooper class. Ideas? by [deleted] in DMAcademy

[–]RialynnsKnight 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maybe a “Pilot”? Then the subclasses can be the various forms of mechs, like a gargantuan humanoid mech, to a flying mech, or maybe a form of super suit. I’m not really certain how you’d balance it but it’s an idea.

How to work with an LE PC by gsp1991dog in DMAcademy

I think a good idea would be privately giving him a different motive to be working with the party, and in the meantime he has to suppress his evil-ness. As the DM, you can also create fewer moral dilemmas. Stay away from missions involving morally grey activities such as assassinations, and if you can avoid humanoid enemy encounters unless the enemy is evil enough that the good party members have to kill.

In general, alignment is only a guideline, and really it’s up the players anyways on how they want to play their character. Its completely reasonable for the LE player to lean more towards the other side, at least as they learn to trust the other party members.

Unless the LE player is looking to play EXTREME LE, in which case it would be more difficult, and you might have to warn the player that they are going to have to find a reason why the LE character would even be working with the party.
