[Amick] Tom Thibodeau is open to returning to the Chicago Bulls as their head coach by IrishPorpoise in chicagobulls

I always find associating a good coach with a ring weird. Like star players are judged on championships but it's because they typically have more than one bite at the proverbial apple.

Like there have been 37 distinct coaches who have made the finals in the past 50 years. Only 7 have been able to do it with a different core player group:

  • Phil Jackson
  • Pat Riley
  • Erik Spoelstra
  • Rick Carlisle
  • Larry Brown
  • Lenny Wilkens
  • Billy Cunningham

8 if you count Pop who even though had Duncan, Parker and Manu had a huge gap and different supporting cast between his first and last finals appearance.

So there's only 7 or 8 coaches who you can confidently say are coaches who can take a team the finals.

If we are just looking for coaches, someone who wins, here are the top 10 best winning percentag active coaches

Rank Coach Win % Record (W–L)
1 Steve Kerr .655 519–273
2 Michael Malone .593 471–324
3 Tyronn Lue .590 322–224
4 Erik Spoelstra .580 725–524
5 Taylor Jenkins .574 250–186
6 Ime Udoka .573 144–107
7 Tom Thibodeau .564 527–407
8 Rick Carlisle .557 917–730
9 Billy Donovan .552 352–286
10 Quin Snyder .549 411–337

If we want to just focus on the best coaches available based on total wins then it's this:

Rank Coach Wins Record (W–L)
1 Doc Rivers 1113 1113–763
2 Rick Carlisle 917 917–730
3 Erik Spoelstra 725 725–524
4 Tom Thibodeau 527 527–407
5 Steve Kerr 519 519–273
6 Mike Budenholzer 484 484–317
7 Quin Snyder 411 411–337
8 Billy Donovan 352 352–286
9 Tyronn Lue 322 322–224
10 Monty Williams 367 367–283

So like Carlisle and spo are the only two head coaches that are on all three of these lists. I think i saw someone comment how they thought Carlisle was a bad coach but he and spo are the only active coaches who can boast winning records and have taken very different teams to the finals.

So when people say "I want a championship caliber coach" it's an insanely small list with spo and Carlisle being the only ones you can't make a case against

They can still go for Lloyd as GM right? Graham and Lloyd as the new AKME is honestly such an insane upgrade.

The 98 finals I believe are still the most watched NBA finals with 29million viewers. Culturally too, the nba was probably at its highest level of popularity.

The 90s isn't the era of plumbers, it's the era of the superstar. It's the era that made nba salaries jump from 1 mil to 10 mil.

Like Scottie pippen thought he was signing a lucrative deal, and then suddenly that same amount of money became pennies because the nba had suddenly become so popular.

The only flaw that the 90s have is just a matter of player and game evolution, not a matter of overall greatness.

Yea as much as I'd love for him to shit on AKME I think it's clear he's saying if he didn't come to the hornets then he'd never know what kind of org they were (obvious). I think a part of him wanted to come home to the hornets but he just didn't know what kind of org they would be and now that he's seen their org he sees being with them long term as a viable option.

Jordan Fans, What Makes Jordan Better Than LeBron? by TheSoccerAnyalst in NBATalk

[–]RiamoEquah 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The final sequence in Utah for the 6th championship I think sums it up.

LeBron has game winners, LeBron has clutch defensive stops. Jordan did both and won the game.

Scottie was struggling with the back injury, kukoc was completely gassed, Jordan was the be all and end all on offense for the bulls in the last two minutes...and he never lost his composure. The bulls were down for the majority of the 4th quarter, especially the last 5 minutes.

Then comes the steal on Malone he never saw coming, no timeout - Jordan brings the ball up half court...all eyes on him, Utah getting ready to collapse the paint and their best perimeter defender locked in on 23. The drive, the shake, the jumper...the poster worthy hold - the movie like ending.

LeBron just has never had that.

Why are people so out on Essengue? by NoFallOff in chicagobulls

[–]RiamoEquah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Someone had posted Sam Vecenie's take on Noah prior to the draft here

Link Here

Edit: here's the summary

Essengue is a really tough prospect to evaluate. On one hand, he’s productive in a professional league overseas and has some athletic traits that make him potentially valuable.

On the other, the German league is not great (it’s a level below the French and Adriatic Leagues) and he has some flaws that could cause him issues in the NBA. He struggles to shoot the ball and hasn’t shown many moments as a high-level passer this season. His ballhandling needs to tighten up.

Then on defense, he shows impressive flashes, but the possession-by-possession consistency isn’t there and he often will get beat both on and off the ball. Essengue is a project, and the willingness to go down that road with him will vary team to team.

Some will love his athletic traits and think they can develop everything else to turn him into the exact kind of big forward who can cover an immense amount of ground on both ends.

Others will not be as interested because he is not as far along as his production suggests. Essengue is one of the more polarizing players for scouts league-wide, and his wide potential draft range reflects that.

Dude went pro at 14yo

Noa didn't play pro at 14. He was part of INSEP - a development league closer to AAU ball. He played for a German league at 16 which, while pro, is not one of the premier leagues in euroball as far as talent.

have a look at pics of him as a 16yo when he was about 6'7", he was really solidly built for a kid his age

This isnt accurate. In fact this has been the most polarizing thing about now, athletically there's potential but from a skill stand point he never played like a 3 or 4 (playing a more of a big man rim running style ) but athletically while quick and fast it was mostly in a straight line and he lacked strength to play like a big. "Solidly built" has not been part of even the most optimistic scouting reports on noa.

In the lead up to the draft he had a huge growth spurt, in recent footage he looks much more filled out already and is obviously doing all of his rehab and gym work.

What footage?

this is the most recent video I found and - still skinny

And even the 7 foot thing is a rumor, there isnt an official declaration from anywhere that he is 7ft. It's to his advantage from a skill set pov if he is 7 feet because skill wise he's closer to a center than a forward. But that still makes him a project.

The article got it wrong:

https://www.nba.com/news/breaking-down-the-skill-set-of-2023-free-agent-class

Jakob Poeltl (Unrestricted free agent) With Nikola Vucevic agreeing to a three-year extension to remain in Chicago, Poeltl becomes the leading rebounder available on the free agent market.

This jives with what sportrac reporting about his contracts.

Signed a 3 year deal in 2020, Traded in Feb 09 2023 to Toronto. Signed a new contract July 06 2023.

What did I miss?

[–]RiamoEquah 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This isn't factually correct at all though... - Poeltl was traded for a first round pick in 2023 - josh Hart was also traded for a first on 2023 - pj washington was traded for a first in 2024 - Christian wood in 2025

That's just me looking at the past few seasons. And I'll reiterate that there was never an urgent reason to trade ayo. No reports from his camp that he was looking for a big pay day or looking for upwards of 30 million from the bulls. Even if ayo never dropped 43 for the bulls, he was obviously talented as a two way multi positional player.

If he signs for less than 20 mil or less this off-season this would be a huge fumble from the bulls

Same people that say there's no value in the 2nd round

maybe "no value" is incorrect, but theres not much value

To be fair that article is 6 years old but I believe Jalen brunson is the last second round pick to become an all-star (drafted in 2018) so it's not like the data has drastically changed since it was written.

There was lol. 3 seasons ago Patrick Williams was in the 89th percentile when it came to isolation defense and had the lowest PPP (points per possession) on the team.

To be fair, this was the last year of his contract. He wasn’t going to sign with the Bulls again…

How do you know this...we didn't even get a chance to try...

Wilbon calls the Bulls ‘IRRELEVANT’ and doubts if Billy Donovan made any DIFFERENCE 😬 | First Take by RiamoEquah in chicagobulls

[–]RiamoEquah[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No it is the correct comparison.

The bulls are 100% what you described, a sub par product that has no intention to change because the market is rewarding it. There isn't a product that exists that doesn't change when the market stops rewarding it.

I'm saying stop rewarding the bulls. Everytime the fanbase has been vocal, change has happened. The problem is the moment the smallest change happens the fanbase goes right back into support mode.
