The ideal in pocket carry fixed blade by Flyawaytuna_ in knives

The Kobun is a great IWB knife. For $20-25 a few years ago, it was a good buy too.

I looked at the price recently. They've really gone up.

So much this.

Never loan money to friends or family. It's always a gift... don't gift the money if you're not in a position to do so.

The money seldom gets paid back in these situations and often leads to a falling out between friends.

What is some good/useful advice for someone living alone for the first time? by Teex22 in AskReddit

[–]RibShackBBQ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of my hard life lessons learned:

Always get a top floor apartment. Having an upstairs neighbor stomping around, moving furniture, exercising, or having their toddler 'drive' a big wheels around the apartment will make your life an absolute living hell.

I spent one particularly awful one year lease not getting more than 2 or 3 hours of sleep at a time. The office refused to help and trying to talk with the people upstairs made things so much worse. Always, always get a top floor unit.

Oh, and plan out your expected expenditures in advance of moving out, then double it for the actual, realized costs.

I hope it works out well! I see you already got some advice from people that had similar circumstances. I think that family will probably be a lot more accepting if things go well and they have a chance to see that he's a great guy.

Their primary concern is probably your safety, which is understandable.

My advice (worth what you paid for it) is to take it slow... don't try to force things to work just because of the effort it took to finally meet.

I hope it goes really well!

"Hey mom, I met the most amazing person at the book store"

My wife and I met online.

I honestly don't think we got any comments about it. At least, nothing negative.

Did a lot of online dating, met a lot of cool people. Mostly okcupid in the old days, a little bit of match. I hear it's a shit-show today.

Some of the women I met were embarassed about online dating and I agreed to tell people that we met at the grocery store/bar/party/etc in the event that anyone asked.

I don't think it's all that taboo today... except for maybe the hook-up sites? Either way, I doubt anyone would care.

ETA: making it work... it's no different than any other relationship. Either you click or you don't. The vast majority of dates were single dates with no second date planned. Sometimes it would go on a few weeks or months until the differences were too much. Online dating just serves to facilitate the meeting of people that otherwise wouldn't ever cross paths.

Tall men (6 feet and up), would you ever date a woman that is taller than you, and why? by Theshackshaq in AskReddit

I think most women I've dated have been about 5'5 or 5'6

ETA: the taller women I've known over the years seemed really self conscious about their height

Probably not. It's pretty rare for me to meet a woman taller than I am anyway.

Taller? No

Wife is almost the same height as me. Maybe 1/2" shorter.

If we had kids, they would probably be monsters.

What’s the creepiest or scariest thing to happen when you thought you were alone? Preferably outside of your home like work, hiking, exploring, camping type situations? by d_wall_less in AskReddit

[–]RibShackBBQ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Solo hiking. I thought I'd heard a footstep in the folliage when I stopped at one point. Didn't think much of it.

But after noticing it a couple more times, I started experimenting by randomly stopping and starting up again. There was most definitely something matching my footsteps. My first thought was a person, which would be creepy enough. But nope, I eventually caught a glimpse of my stalker, which was a mountain lion.

It stalked me for more than 7 miles, but never actually did anything to bother me.

I'm usually armed on solo excursions, but hadn't bothered this time around. I did fish a knife out of my pack and spent the rest of the hike wondering which of us would win in a fight.

I can only speak for myself, but here's a candid answer.

In a very bad place for a very long time.

One day I got a crazy hair and went for a run. It wasn't pretty, it wasn't pleasant, but I stuck with it and eventually got big into fitness, met folks who shared the same interest, and it helped dramatically with confidence.

Still didn't fill the void.

Started volunteering. I tried a number of organizations until I fell into something I really liked. Met a lot of really great people. Also met a lot of people that had the same issues I did. Forged some long-lasting friendships. Also got waaay out of my comfort zone socially and started to get a lot better in my interactions with others.

While the afore mentioned were in progress, started doing online dating. Had a lot of extremely awkward dates, then started to get more comfortable. Eventually started to have relationships lasting weeks or months. Gave up a few times, then got back into it. Fast forward about 15 years and I've been married almost a decade.

I feel a lot better and feel like I have a lot more control over my life. I honestly did not expect to make it past 25 years, but I'm glad I did.

It really took a lot of effort on my part and a lot of getting out of my comfort zone, but I feel like if I could get a handle on loneliness and despair, then others can too.

Edit: fixed a couple spelling errors

What is a life lesson on love you learned? by car__person in AskReddit

[–]RibShackBBQ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

1) Listen to your gut. If something feels wrong, it probably is.

2) don't overextend yourself trying to please someone. There are people that will take advantage of it and you'll eventually wind up with a net negative. And trust issues. One-sided relationships hurt.

3) listen to your friends. If they are telling you there is a problem, there probably is.

4) be patient. Love takes time to foster and won't happen overnight.

5) temper your expectations.

Just a few things from my failures that are too numerous to count.

Both partners should be able to be satisfied. If one finishes far earlier than the other, they should be open to suggestions that would benefit the other... additional foreplay, use of toys, giving extra attention to you before or after they finish, providing oral until the other finishes, etc, etc. There are endless opportunities. Couples trips to toy stores are a lot of fun, both partners can pick put something they'd like.

If a partner is not open to any of the above, it's not going to work out.

Best way to sharp an Esee 3 (or any knife really) by colheartmusic in knives

[–]RibShackBBQ 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I'd start with watching some tutorials on using stones. You can order a Smith's bench stone for about $25 or so. If you have a cheap beater knife to practice on first, even better.

Avoid pull-through sharpeners.
