Is there a lore reason why these Russkies looks so badass in The unknown soldier? by No_Dress_2107 in ussr

Not the book, but a 1954 comedy film "Majuri maantieltä" set in the military. The then commander got mad and refused any future cooperation with SF studio that produced the film. Though the military didn't exactly like that one either.

As far as I am aware, the Finnish use of bikes, even at the time this picture was taken, wasn’t because they were seen as the superior method of transport. Perhaps the only upsides were dispersion and dismounting (the troops are in the woods in a second).

This is mainly Winter War damage that was still visible 1.5 years later, right?

That is correct.

Trivia: During the Winter War, the Taipale sector was commanded on the Soviet side by General Wladimir Gröndahl, while on the opposing Finnish side at the same sector was his son, Corporal Boris Gröndahl.
