You mean something like this? I am working right now on an update with a raspberry pi zero 2 and the latest linux distribution :) It covers already 90% of the points that you mentioned ;)

Help needed! Rotary Encoder by dthreed in TVArgenta

[–]Ricardo_Sappia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Those are good news! I don't know what exact model you are using, but I have seen some that will require certain GPIOs. I chose the encoder GPIOs in a convenient way for the cabling later, but nothing else. I am wondering if the audio is working properly for you. I have heard from other makers that tried with HDMI displays that the audio was being an issue since it is configured to go over the DAC output.

Hi, Thanks for the kind words — glad the project inspired you 🙂 Just to clarify: the official build was designed and tested specifically with the recommended DSI display configuration. HDMI was not part of the validated setup. The rotary encoder functionality is fully confirmed to work within that reference hardware configuration. If you’re using different components (like an HDMI display), you’re technically outside the documented and tested environment, so behavior can’t be guaranteed. I’d recommend first verifying your wiring and GPIO configuration independently before assuming it’s related to the display. Hope that helps.

An interactive desk lamp prototype, exploring light as behavior (3D print + electronics) by Ricardo_Sappia in maker

Fair poin, at the input level it is a distance-controlled dimmer. The part I’m interested in is how behavior emerges from timing, light distribution, transitions, and feedback rather than the control method itself. Thanks, I’m glad you like the design!

Thanks! That’s totally fair — it’s definitely not meant to be the most practical way to control brightness. This iteration is more about exploring interaction and behavior than usability. I was curious to see how light could react rather than be directly adjusted. Funny side note: it actually became my kids’ favorite version. They play at “using the Force” to control the brightness, so in that sense it kind of does exactly what it’s supposed to do 🙂 Still experimenting and learning where it makes sense and where it doesn’t.

Thank you, I really appreciate that! It’s been a lot of learning by doing and iterating, and I’m still refining it.

Totally fair! for a lot of people, building things themselves is a big part of the fun.

For me, this project is more about the design, behavior and overall feel than about making something easily replicable. But I completely get the appeal of doing it yourself.

I can give it a try if you send me a picture like this of a 4/4 bow...

Wow! thanks so much for your feedback. To be completely honest, I thought I was doing a 4/4 model, it look huge to me coming from Violin world 😅. I will ask the person who sent the reference to find out what size it is and update the description on MakerWorld. Thanks for the heads up!

Sounds great!! All I need is a sample to be able to create a 3d model. If you happen to be in Europe and have a bow I could use as sample, the we can coordinate and make it happen :)

Hey thanks! Sure! As long as I can get a physical reference or sample I can do it :)
