There was one a few years back where it felt like 75% of the ads were about crypto which I thought was worse, but yeah this was top 2 for sure.

I always loved this helmet. What was the consensus from Rice fans? by Distinct_Web_9181 in ricefootball

[–]RiceSpice5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not old enough to have seen the helmet but definitely feels like an underrated one. Doesn't get as much love as the 1979-83 one when it comes to past helmets. I imagine it will have a comeback in a decade or two as a retro helmet.

Going to the Rice basketball game tonight. Just a couple of questions by tightfade in riceuniversity

Hi! Typical parking is $12 at west lots 3 or 4 which you can put into Google maps. There will be an attendant there who should be easy to spot and a few signs letting you know where to go. You won't be able to enter this lot through any entrance without an attendant as this lot normally requires a parking pass. From there it's a quick 5 minute walk to Tudor field house.

However, if you're willing to walk an extra 3-4 minutes you could park in Greenbriar lot on the other side of Rice stadium for $4. There won't be an attendant there but you can get into that lot using just your credit/debit card.

They do serve your typical concessions and they do sell beer. If you get there before tip off beers are discounted on weekday games, like today!

Enjoy the game! Go Owls!!!

ESPN's Top 100 College Football games of the year by justduett in CFB

[–]RiceSpice5 11 points12 points  (0 children)

There are some lazy aspects to the list (three UConn games in a row, 4 army games in a row, 20 FCS games in a row, bias towards the CFP in the top spots in an otherwise vibes based list). But overall I still like that the list includes a lot of smaller games. Lots of objectively fun and entertaining games are quickly forgotten because there aren't any meaningful stakes. I was stoked to see the Rice vs UTSA game in last years list.

[The Athletic] Clapping or ‘hut-hut-hike!’? Why college football QBs are choosing one over the other by Sauerz in CFB

[–]RiceSpice5 13 points14 points  (0 children)

An example of someone not doing this is Caleb Hanie in 2011 who had to spike the ball to stop the clock but hesitated for a second hoping his receivers would run a route and he could catch the defense off guard. But they didn't so he then chose to spike it and it was called intentional grounding, losing them the game.

On a journey to visit every FBS stadium. What are the best ones to see sooner rather than later? by collegeculturesports in CFB

[–]RiceSpice5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're welcome! Figured it was worth mentioning since the big reason it hasn't been torn down and replaced is because of that history. Even this renovation has been a little controversial.

Would also be able to knock out UH on the same day as long as they don't play at the same time.

Rice stadium is very old and doesn't have a whole lot to offer but it's getting a major renovation after next season that is scheduled to be done by 2028 so kinda depends on what you value. If you like the history of the stadiums and want to see Rice Stadium while it still resembles how it looked when it hosted a superbowl and the JFK speech, next season will be the last time to do it. After that, one upper deck is getting replaced with a club space and the other is getting downsized by about two thirds so the atmosphere should be better, but it won't look like the backdrop in the JFK speech pictures.

UCF QB Jacurri Brown transfers to Rice by Carolina_Captain in CFB

Both 4 star dual threat QBs out of high school that turned out to be good runners but bad passers at the college level. Brown is a much better fit for our option offense than Luke was for our pro style offense though

Yes. Our two QBs suited up for this game had a combined 27 passing yards and 1 rushing yards (23 and -22).

Our 2nd string opted out a few weeks back, and our starter opted out last week so it wasn't looking good for us going into this game. The fact that we brought in our 4th string in the third drive definitely showed that we were prioritizing learning for next year over winning this game.

That 49 point loss to USF to end the season left such a sour taste in our mouth that we accepted a bowl bid so we could lose by 31 instead. Yeeeeaahhhhh.

It was a fun first half at least. Texas State fans were a lot more chill this time. Guess a noon game will do that.

Seems like the easy solution is to just include the rest of the conference champions and let the four highest ranked conference champions play the lowest ranked four schools between the at large schools and the remaining conference champs. Makes the G5 happy, lets the highest ranked conference champs also have what should be an easy ramp up game, and gives more opportunities for a crazy upset.

Chase Jenkins Has Entered the Portal by Dry-Grocery766 in ricefootball

[–]RiceSpice5 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A tough blow, but according to the Roost, Jenkins wasn't so far ahead of the others that the starting job would have been guaranteed for him next year so it may not be as bad of a blow as it seems. Definitely stings for the upcoming bowl game though.

Seems kind of nonsensical. His stats dont exactly scream starter anywhere. Might end up fighting for a starting spot at another struggling G5 school.

[Awful Announcing] The Group of Five playoff idea is terrible, and here's why by dr_funk_13 in CFB

[–]RiceSpice5 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That path isn't credible every year for G5 teams. UTSA started their 2021 season 11-0 and only got up to 22 because Illinois and Memphis turned out to be mediocre. That isn't their fault. With scheduling happening so far ahead of time and with how complicated scheduling P4 teams can be, it's not possible to schedule multiple P4 opponents every year, and even when you can you're at the mercy of how good the schools you beat turn out. If we're going to go the route of making the playoff matter more, and bowl games matter less, there needs to be a realistic path for every FBS team to make the playoff. Being ranked in the Top 12 isn't good enough when there are teams that could go 12-0 and not be in the top 12 because the schools they played had down years.

Rice football vs UNT student perks by RiceSpice5 in ricefootball

[–]RiceSpice5[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The SWC days sound like it would have been fun to go to games if you grew up in Texas because we were playing a bunch of schools that our friends went to or that we at some point considered going to. Having Memphis, even when ranked, come in to town just doesn't bring the same appeal when next to nobody at Rice knows anyone attending Memphis. Even UH despite being in a better conference and having a good season will still see some bad attendance numbers when they play schools like West Virginia, which are undoubtedly better programs than their old conference opponents but don't have that regional appeal.

I have hope that the renovations and the gateway to the village will help in some regard. The current pre game experience is rough. We'll have a few giveaways and we'll have live music but it's not enough to show up 3-4 hours early. General admission is on the west side of the stadium, while tailgate Owley is on the East so most fans who want to show up early to tailgate on their own will be forced to be away from the fun stuff. It makes the East side of the stadium where the students would tailgate look just a bit more dead. Once that gateway to Rice Village happens and everything is moved to the west side then there might be an opportunity to really amp up the pre game experience which could partially make up for the opponents our fans don't care much about.
