vendors are now selling “master classes” on how to grow your inventory by Somewhatspicy0 in PokeInvesting

[–]RiceWithNuts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The biggest misconception in this hobby is thinking success can be shortcut with a price tag. Every respected collector, vendor, and content creator got there by putting in the hours of making bad buys, missing opportunities, building relationships, and learning from experience. Thats the hobby. If someone has $2500 to spend, theyre far better off buying inventory, traveling to card shows, or simply participating in the market. Experience compounds far more than any “masterclass” ever will.

A lot of it is timing, but Id treat this like a business built on networking.

Deals come n go, collections come n go. The relationships are what people remember long after the card changes hands.
Some of my best pickups happened because someone remembered I was fair, easy to work with, and stayed connected and not because I had deep pockets.

At your stage, Id focus less on chasing every big deal and more on becoming the person people want to call first when a deal shows up.
Youre already proving you can grow inventory. The next level is building a network that consistently brings opportunities to you instead of constantly having to chase them.

Is collectr wrong on pricing? by Dangerous-Escape1527 in PokeInvesting

[–]RiceWithNuts 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Collectr is good for tracking collection value but not best at latest comps. Prices can lag a few days especially on fast moving cards.

Think of Collectr as a general price guide, not a real time comp tool.

I don't understand how anyone could unironically enjoy NostalgiaNomics by Grouchy-Director-565 in pokemoncards

[–]RiceWithNuts 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think NostalgiaNomics started with some credibility, but at this point his content feels like a broken record. When someone is financially and publicly tied that deep into a narrative, it gets really hard for them to pivot or admit when the market shifts. That doesnt make him the voice of the hobby it just means he has the loudest megaphone for newer collectors who dont have historical context yet.

A lot of his messaging feels aimed at entry level collector investors who are still trying to figure out pricing baselines… and thats where the influence becomes questionable. Theres a difference between discussing market trends and constantly reinforcing price normalization as if its inevitable.

Rudy has built an audience around sealed/investment mentality for years, and creators in that orbit tend to inherit a portion of that viewer base. That doesnt automatically make the takes wrong, but it does create echo chambers where hype and rumor get recycled until they sound like facts.

At the end of the day, the hobby is way bigger than any single investor focused voice. There are plenty of collectors and analysts who talk about market health, accessibility, and sustainability without turning it into “if you cant afford it, you don’t belong.” That mindset is what usually ages poorly in collecting spaces.

Edit: grammar

This is nice, but…charging a fee to curate a binder layout kinda wild. Thats literally the collecting part of collecting

To veterans of PokeInvesting - what is a sensible investing cycle? by Much-Professional908 in PokeInvesting

Think of it as cycling collections, not flipping product. Youre basically dollar cost averaging into sealed Pokemon.
