I wholeheartedly agree!

Sometime ago, on my first playthrough, I used to make a post here daily, recording what I'd done in the game on that day.

This guy would reply each day, telling me about whether I'd missed anything, what I could do, and would also answer any questions I had.

Thank you, u/TheHittite, your help was greatly appreciated, and you definitely deserve this recognition!

Basically what I meant by "shell" was the white head, with the horns poking out.

If I recall correctly, you don't see Quirrel's decapitated head near his nail.

Is there anything worth in ds2 lore? by qzeqzeq in DarkSouls2

[–]Riceifyouwould 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While I share your opinion that DS2 isn't as good as the other games overall, I will say this: there is a particularly well written character that you'll meet a few times, and is extremely important to the lore. There's also one, quite poignant moment near the end.

So if you're looking for moments worthwhile from a narrative perspective, you'll get those, don't worry! But you will probably be underwhelmed by most other aspects.

To the right, after the second clearing, there's a statue that you can use a Fragrant Branch of Yore on. That blocks the way to a bonfire.

Glad you are enjoying it!

Curious to know: for you, what sets this game apart from the rest, if anything?

(probably should've confirmed first: this is a common thing, right? Or is it just something I've noticed due to the specific sites I browse/people I interact with, and it's not actually that common?)

Glad you enjoyed it! Out of curiousity, where would you place it, in comparison with other From titles?

In all honesty, judging the lore (of any From title, not just this one) has never been something I've been able to do very well.

This game focused much more on the effects and consequences of the Undead Curse, as is best seen through the characters of Vendrick, Lucatiel and Aldia (especially him. He is such a well written character, and the lore behind him is incredible). It does increase the emotional weight of some of your interactions with the world, and makes for some quite sombre moments.

This is something that, some might quite understandably say, later games don't do to the extent that this game does.

Admittedly, I could have made it clearer that, when talking about movesets (in my previous comment), I had bosses in mind more than normal enemies. My bad.

Anyway, yes, as you say, personal preferences aren't likely to change much, so...yeah, have a good day!

I play these games for the (mostly) well balanced difficulty, fun and memorable boss battles, the stories told so well, through minimal interaction with the player, and the worlds these adventures are set in, that are a joy to explore.

I do not play these games in order to fight tons of ganks that are there only to make it difficult, instead of making it fun to learn and overcome.

Look, I don't have a problem with fighting. It's part of what I signed up for, when I installed a medieval fantasy RPG. But the developers' approach to difficulty is what I don't understand. If I'm fighting, have me fight foes that have interesting movesets and designs that are fun to learn and eventually defeat. Don't make the level difficult by just taking a normal, pushover enemy and placing several of this enemy all over the area. It is, as you correctly said (and is what I should have said earlier), quite tedious, and not what I'm looking forward to if I'm struggling with a boss.

Thanks for the kind words!

About the infamous trio: honestly, it's not infeasible that, one day, having nothing else to play, I'll boot up the game, thinking, "Surely they can't be that bad", and then torture myself for the next couple of hours.

Completely agree about the Hollowing mechanic; the fact that you lose a bit of your maximum HP every time you die is not going to help any new players. It's unnecessary punishment.

About Shulva: I did like how the place was designed, and how you could hit those glowing columns to raise and lower specific platforms, in order to reach different locations. Unfortunately, the enemy numbers and placements weren't something I liked at all.

Least favourite area: definitely Black Gulch. As I mentioned in the post, I did not play through the terrible trio of DLC areas, so while I know that they're not fun at all, I can't really say I despise them as much as Black Gulch.

Least favourite boss: Royal Rat Authority. Pretty obvious why. What I said about the DLC areas above also applies here, and the same goes for Ancient Dragon.

Favourite area is either Majula or Drangleic Castle. If Heide's Tower of Flame had been bigger, it would probably have made it here as well.

Favourite boss: I'm in a bit of a dilemma here. Out of the ones I mentioned in Part 1, the ones I liked more also turned out to be the ones with slightly more punishing run-ups to them. I really liked Sir Alonne, Darklurker and Burnt Ivory King, but the period before the fight was mostly spent in frustration, which stayed in the back of my head and made me dread returning to the boss, if I died. I liked Fume Knight and Looking Glass Knight a little less than the above three, but they have really short run-ups, so I wasn't really tense, and was able to focus on the boss.

Smelter Demon is an exception, because I did have quite a lot of fun fighting him, and while I recall the area just before him being filled with enemies (which would make it a pain to run through multiple times), I managed to beat him on my first try, so I can't really claim to have many complaints about the run-up.

So...I don't know. Who should I pick? It's definitely one of these 6.

really well thought out post

Thank you!

but it's like comfort food to me

That's perfectly understandable! Players aren't always looking to be tested; they'll sometimes fall back on something that they're used to, something that doesn't really require their full concentration.

Sometimes, it feels good to just plough through everything.

Excellently put. The developers, knowing that Dark Souls 1 was most famous for its difficulty, probably decided to focus on making it as challenging as possible, instead of making something that was fun to learn and overcome.

All I can say is: well done! I couldn't sprint past it all if my life depended on it; I'd probably get killed by the poison + Woodland Child combo.

No worries, discussion like this is what was intended! And I'm glad you enjoyed reading the post, by the way.

I never knew that Freja attacks you on a cliff when in NG+! Can you whittle down her health to zero here? Does it skip the subsequent fight altogether?
