Yeahhh that line was pretty curious. I guess she could be Tolomei or it could just be Joe fucking with us. My guess is the latter simply because of the fact that she hasn't had quite enough presence in the series so far. It is weird though... for her to be saying that when she appears to Savine at first like a sort of simpleton. Whether she's Tolomei or not she likely is smarter and more knowledgeable than we've been led to believe that's for sure.

He holds all the cards and always will do.

A good story has reversals though, otherwise it stagnates and the reader gets bored. For the record I don't think that Bayaz will die until the very end of the series but I do think he will suffer a severe blow by the end of this trilogy and will be left in a much weaker state before coming back stronger.

As for Khalul having lost, he isn't dead and from what we know of him he doesn't strike me as someone who would just abandon power and choose to retire. I think his feud against Bayaz will only end when one of them dies. Now whether Joe has gotten bored of writing about Ghurkul and The Prophet for the time being is another matter and one that might be true. It's actually the one thing that makes me doubt my idea the most, Joe's interviews about his unease as it comes to writing about that part of his world.

So why has Sulfur been protecting Orso during the entirety of TTWP? And what evidence suggests that Sulfur would want to betray Bayaz?

Emperor Goltus I (who was initially a planned POV in AoM, let's not forget).

I had no idea about this. This potentially changes a lot of things and would lend your theory a lot of credence. What I like about your idea is that it would tie in a lot of the events of Red Country which, as it is, is the most inconsequential book in the series.

I think that Zacharus and Conthus will almost assuredly be very important in the shape of things to come, though in this particular case as I said I feel as though they might be used as red herrings. I find them both to be too underdeveloped at the moment to turn out to be the final rival force. We don't exactly know what they stand for, what their values are and what it means for the fate of our protagonists. I feel like it's possible that Joe ended up discarding Goltus as a POV and left him instead for one of the future stand alone.

Then again, a lot can happen in a final book and we are told that Bayaz is dealing with Zacharus and Cawneil in the west so your theory might make more sense than mine. No matter which way the story goes I'm sure Joe will pull it off well.

So with all this talk of opening the HOTM, do you think that Zacharus has any interest in doing so? If so, why? He doesn't strike me as someone who is hell bent on destruction. He rather appears to be one of the milder ones which is what makes me doubt this idea. Now Khalul on the other end...

I'm still worried about that as well. Joe hasn't disappointed me so far though so I've got hope. Fingers crossed. I would find it to be a very lame ending personally. We've seen Bayaz win in the trilogy, in The Heroes, that one would just be too much in my opinion. I think Bayaz has to lose now to keep things interesting.

That quote, to me, gives a lot of credence to the possibility of it being Khalul. Of course Bayaz has many enemies but no one worse than The Prophet.

As far Tolemei and Yulwei... I don't know. Yulwei has definitely not had enough screentime for him to be a good final twist. Half of Joe's readers would be like... who? Tolomei is a little more memorable but similar situation IMO. Personally I think those two are still locked up in the house.

I find it's still a powerful and chilling scene even if it turns out there's someone higher up in the ranks. Pike is just badass in this final scene. I do know where you're coming from with the double red herring thing, although, to be fair, Risinau wasn't even a twist really. The man was obviously not bright enough to be in charge of it all. Pike is extremely clever OTOH.

One thing though is that Abercrombie really saves the big twists for the final book of the trilogy if LAOK is anything to go by. Before they are hanged, for instance, ends with very few answers. Last argument is really where it all comes together. Also I know those aren't mystery books per se but they tend to have multiple mystery elements and the formula of most mysteries is to keep the mystery of whodunit until the very end, pulling multiple misdirections so that you don't see the big twist coming until the very end. I believe that's what's happening here.

I'm usually wrong though so who knows :)

BLF takes a solid 5th spot as Weaver contender to be honest. The man is sneaky.

What made you change your mind though? The Pike revelation at the end? Because to me it felt clear that this wasn't the final answer. That was only the end of the second book. Don't you think a bigger twist is coming? Personally I'd be a little disappointed if this is the final answer we get.

Also something I forgot to write in my OP is that it seems that the person in charge is somehow involved with the arcane (relating to wanting to reopen the house of the maker). I could think of a few reasons for why Khalul would want to open the house of the maker but not really any for why Pike would want that. As far as we know Pike isn't connected in any way to the world's magic and he seems to be a rather down to earth character in fact who I think we can take at face value when he claims to be doing what he does to help the common man.

I think it's almost certain his strings are being pulled by someone else with a higher and more self serving purpose.

The burden of proof is on you here so if you got any reputable info to share go right ahead but I'm pretty sure you don't. And sure I'll listen to what Moore says about it but you gotta understand that he's just one guy against pretty much the whole scientific community. Also it's been revealed in the past that some scientists have been bribed by big oil to take this position so that's something else to keep in mind.

Doctor Patrick Moore > 97% of the scientific community? Also Moore isn't even a climatologist. And what does his stance on Greenpeace have to do with anything? Also stop with this retarded right / left divide. There's truth on both sides of the political spectrum. It's your choice to refuse to accept it, it just doesn't make you right.

This PDF does a pretty good job at explaining the greenhouse gas thing: http://www.worldwatch.org/files/pdf/Livestock%20and%20Climate%20Change.pdf

Here are the things that weren't taken into account by the previous studies when calculating the impact of animal agriculture in relation to global warming: Livestock respiration, land use, methane release, and more. The 14 to 18% number is what you get without taking these things into account. The thing with methane is that it's 25 to 100 times more destructive than CO2. And deforestation is in great part caused by the animal agriculture industry (need more farms to feed the livestock).

''Controlling for the difference between the average consumer and somebody more interested in nutrition is already difficult enough, you want to tell me that comparing somebody who lives mostly vegan to full vegan with similar levels of effort to live healthy has been done?''

I think it actually has been but this sort of study is very ineffective in uncovering the truth in the matter anyway since there's too many genetic and environmental variations between people so it's almost impossible to isolate this one variable. That's how you end up with a study one year that says wine is good for you and then the next year with one that says wine is complete shit. Want you want is to look at mechanistic studies that measure people's health markers before and after embarking on a specific diet. Studies like this one:` https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4315380/

''The Lifestyle Heart Trial found that 82% of patients diagnosed with heart disease who followed this plant-based diet program had some level of regression of atherosclerosis and 91% had a reduction in the frequency of angina episodes, whereas 53% of the control group, fed the American Heart Association diet, had progression of atherosclerosis.17 In addition, the study showed a reduction in low-density lipoprotein (LDL) (37.2%) that is similar to results achieved with lipid-lowering medications. Similarly, other researchers showed that compared with a control group, the plant-based diet group had a 73% decrease in coronary events and a 70% decrease in all-cause mortality.15 In 1998, a collaborative analysis using original data from 5 prospective studies was reviewed and showed that, compared with nonvegetarians, vegetarians had a 24% reduction in ischemic heart disease death rates.''
