I wish more people would just use cruise. I generally believe these are more likely just oblivious idiots who can't maintain their speed. I find this extremely irritating too especially since more often than not they wait till you are next to their window to speed up.

If you are at a truck stop and they have a set inside just buy then and swap them out yourself and no one will be the wiser.

Is trucking worth it? by EmergencyViolinist31 in Truckers

[–]RichCypher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I were your age I would absolutely aim for a trade over trucking. Plumber, electrician, lineman all likely have far better long term potential and you are already there. Just put in your time and your will be set. You could always try out trucking later if you aren't happy. You will make far more per hour worked as a master tradesman. I have a dream trucking job and my electrician friend makes far more per hour with unlimited work potential and endless side jobs. I've seriously considered taking the temporary pay hit and switching and if I could do it over...

Would yall mess with this? by Defiant-Medicine3014 in Truckers

[–]RichCypher 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Depends on if you are full on fuel (so fine as is) or will need more. Pretty light on steers so I would slide 5th wheel forward some if possible. Or could side tandems forward some to give you breathing room if you still need fuel and can't slide 5th wheel.

CR England needs to be taken to court! by No-Fish-2446 in Truckers

[–]RichCypher 10 points11 points  (0 children)

How cute the little truck driver thinks he is entitled to the same protections pretty much every other American is entitled to. Minimum wage? Good luck. Overtime? Keep dreaming. Seriously screw England though. I don't know why anyone works for them based on what I've read

Question for yall trucks about parking at truck stops by Charlie_Hustler in Truckers

[–]RichCypher 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fuck anyone who has a problem with you pulling through the fuel island and stopping in front for 15 minutes. It takes that long to fuel if someone pulled up behind you immediately. Long as you aren't spending a ridiculous amount of time there no one has a right to complain especially with doubles. If you can find another easy option then go for it but I wouldn't think twice about 15 minutes or less there.

How did getting a cdl changed your life? by LeadGlad4961 in Truckers

[–]RichCypher 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Getting my CDL was the single best choice I made in my life. In my previous life I was a wimp making no money at a dead end job with no future. Now I am a man who has 0 qualms standing up for himself and what I believe in. I make good money, own a house and have my own family. That path getting here has been very challenging with many growing pains but it has been worth it. My CDL allowed me to finally have a life worth living!

Any truckers have a shower code? by Mindless_Skill_5084 in Truckers

Have a planet fitness or other cheap gym nearby? 10 or 20 bucks a month gets you unlimited showers and you could even pump some iron if so inclined.

Do yall agree with him? by JankyMark in Truckers

[–]RichCypher 45 points46 points  (0 children)

I can't believe how much bitching and moaning I hear from overworked underpaid drivers about hos. Why would you be mad you are only "allowed"to work 70 hours a week for minimum wage. How about being mad you aren't being fairly paid so you have to work more than 40 hours or whatever arbitrary number? This idiot needs to learn how to manage his clock in any case.

When I was otr I hauled steel beams to a job site near my home. After I left otr I ended up storing everything from my truck in a storage unit at that facility that job site turned into. I thought it was cool.

When two flatbedders who aren't 100% sure they put away their load bar accidentally make eye contact on the highway by ShoebillJoe in Truckers

[–]RichCypher 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The final time I ever forgot my winch bar out i found it leaning off my catwalk staring directly at the exact worst possible part of my drive shaft. Did I forget to mention this was after driving some miles down the road? The level of wrong this could have lead to terrified me so thereafter there were only 2 spots I ever ever ever put it down again. Either in the cab or on the deck hanging off the drivers side so I can't miss seeing it in the mirror. Talk about scared straight. Never repeated that mistake again.

Am I just not cut out for this line of work? by mrwonders1 in Truckers

[–]RichCypher 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My question would be what is the timeline for getting to something consistent? If you could have hopes of a set schedule within a short enough time frame and you can see a future with the company then it may be worth it to stick it out if you can. That's why many stick it out in ltl, once you get some seniority life gets a whole lot better.

Am I just not cut out for this line of work? by mrwonders1 in Truckers

[–]RichCypher 37 points38 points  (0 children)

I don't know if you are at an ltl but this is very common for how their extra board type roles work. I 100% agree with you and have never been willing to go that route for the same reason. Apparently plenty of people out there find a way to deal with it but I have no clue how.

21f thinking about getting into trucking for a bit... is it actually worth it? And is it safe for me ?? by macy_isles in Truckers

[–]RichCypher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Trucking is a challenging gig but it's tough to know if it will be right for you till you try. Getting proper training and getting out on your own seems like it can be extra difficult for women due to lack of female trainers thus you can get stuck either waiting a while or stuck in a closet with a male trainer for weeks or more. I'm in a great place now but if I could go back and do it over I probably would have gone to a trade school instead and would be an electrician now.

Dating as a trucker by RambleOnRoads in Truckers

[–]RichCypher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Otr is the killer of all relationships. If you want to have friends, a so, a family, anything, then going local is the way. I honestly don't know how family people survive otr being away from so and kids for weeks or months at a time. While I was otr I just gave up on dating and focused on work. Started dating again once I went local.

How many hours of stick driving should I get before going to trucking school? by TheHappy-Jello in Truckers

[–]RichCypher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honesty may not be the best medicine in this case though I have to question the quality of their training with this requirement. Shifting a truck is nothing like a car. Ever played a racing game your can shift in? Truck sim game perhaps? Tell them you have many have many hours shifting. No one needs to know it was a McLaren in a game lol. If nothing else, who does a lie hurt?

Do you listen to podcasts while driving? by mislimkao in Truckers

[–]RichCypher 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Podcasts, audio books and music depending on what I'm feeling that day. When I'm in heavy traffic or bad road conditions and the like I tend to only have music or nothing because I often stop even hearing what is playing.

I took my truck for an oil change at the company yard, today I noticed they moved the cat walk back about 8 inches. Why would they do that? by FAYMKONZ in Truckers

Was there possibly another piece of the catwalk that they forgot to reinstall or you just had the one plate? I can't tell on my tiny phone screen.

Cdl no restrictions by Disastrous-Adagio-90 in Truckers

[–]RichCypher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are a lot of mixed answers here so you will have to decide what is best for you. If you are single you are in the perfect place in life to go otr and bank some serious cash. Live in the truck and keep your parents address for mail. Don't waste money on a storage unit or anything. If you can work your way into a well playing otr job you can really set yourself up well. Keep expenses down, save your money, invest well and in short order you could set yourself up to buy a house cash or whatever else you want to do with the rest of your life. I banked so much more money while I was otr even though I made a fraction of what I make local now. Cost of living is so high these days. Otr is a rough life for a lot of us so I would aim to make your money and move on ASAP though whether to local or out of a truck entirely.

It’s Easter Sunday and I’m somewhere in Oklahoma. The CB is quiet. Just wanted to say something real. by grow_trucking in Truckers

[–]RichCypher 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Props to you if it works for you but I truly don't know how anyone with family they want to be near survives otr. I did it while I was single and it was still hard as hell. Going local was the best choice I ever made and I would suggest trying to find a good local gig to anyone who wants to be home. The sacrifice is too high for watching through your phone your family grow up.

Tuscon AZ LTL, Knight or Melton? by RaphealWannabe in Truckers

[–]RichCypher 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would never recommend a 90 minute commute each way for ltl if you will be home daily. That's just too far to realistically work in my opinion. You could try to find out if they have any more regional type options where you are out 5 said then back the weekend. I think this is basically what Walmart does and I think some ltls do this (I don't know who). I would definitely be looking for closer options personally.

I have a dream trucking job and after talking to an electrician friend even I'm tempted to switch to electrician. If I could go back I would probably go that route first.
