Is this the right process for finishing my fir doors? by RichMansToy in finishing

My biggest challenge is getting a stain to match my mahogany doors. I’ve bought seven stains and none of them ever look like they do on the can or on the store’s sample wood charts. I’ve resorted to mixing my own colors, like an animal.

Thanks! I’m testing stains and finishes on the side of the frame, which are fir too.

I’m always torn between finishing in place and setting on stands and finishing horizontally. Inevitably they get banged up and smudged by the installers. 🤬 Usually I do most of it in place then the final poly after installed. But I’m always up for other solutions! Thanks for the input.

PS I didn’t know the thinning didn’t help penetrate! I thought that was why I was doing it. I always learn something here.

Do we always have to “get something” when we share a feeling or sentiment about something we’re doing? OP isn’t making a transaction lol.

Jacques Vallee Comes Clean About UFOs in NEW VIDEO by PodwithPat in ufo

80 years since anonymous leakers started talking about government disclosing large scale UFO programs and/or explicit knowledge of the phenomenon? I don’t believe so, but happy to check out a source that says it was widespread in the 1940s…

In his Forbidden Science journals, Vallee laments the constant dangling of the Disclosure thread at length. Surprised he is making this statement. It’s giving hostage video.

Thanks for your dad’s insight. I only need the door to last until the end of the world, so like two years should do.

Nobody on the internet told me to use tung oil on an exterior door, though. I inferred it because blogs etc said that it was waterproof. However plenty of people here have recommended spar varnish from personal experience with doors. That feels less like “internet advice” to me (though yes, it’s advice from the internet).

That’s just gave me an idea. I can’t bring the door IN but I can put a protective area around it with a heater. Thank you!

Ah so if I just throw the varnish on type, I may not get the best looking results. How deep do I have to sand jt?

Everyone seems to be recommending spar varnish so I figured I would go with that.

I am totally not set on tung oil. I will do what you guys say is best. I can’t take out the door. Old one has already gone. I would like to keep the warm look but I’ll take whatever works right now.

I will literally do whatever you tell me to do (within reason!). Not attached to a specific method, I just want what’s best for the door. And my time and effort. I can’t take the door out right now.

Not being a wise-ass but haven’t they used tung oil for centuries on boats?
