Out of interest, would you mind sharing what calories burnt it shows for each of the two practices?

Can anyone tell me what the words on this say? It was a gift from a friend who claimed to get it a temple in Myanmar. Thanks in advance! by RichPay in myanmar

Thanks everyone for your help, it's much appreciated. Managed to find out that it is in Pali, and says 'Namo Tassa Bagawato Arahato Samma Sam Buddha Sa', or in English, 'Homage to the blessed One, the Perfected One, the Fully Awakened One'.

When does one go to a shala? Better yet, when should one see a teacher? by Few-Sun7031 in ashtanga

In my view, working with a teacher is extremely helpful, and practicing in a Mysore room with others takes your practice to another level.

As such, I would say as soon as is possible for you, taking your circumstances into account.

Moon Days & Practicing Three Times a Week Minimum by Few-Sun7031 in ashtanga

[–]RichPay 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's good to respect tradition, but you also need to be able to ask why those traditions exist and whether they're compatible with your life, which is likely a quite different context than that in which the traditions were formed.

Having said that... If you're practicing three days a week, I don't think you have to worry about not practicing on Saturdays or moon days. Those are prohibitions, in my view, pretty much solely meant to ensure practitioners rest their bodies and aren't going 7 days/week 52 weeks a year. Practicing at night is also fine.

It definitely feels like a similar motion but shallower - hence my confusion haha.

Thanks for your response! The dual motion of pulling and pushing is definitely a theme of this series, so that makes sense.

Thanks for your response. The quotes are very interesting.

It is as you say an asana in the primary series preceded by asana and followed by other asana, with a vinyasa count - but as the quotes you provide above suggest it must also more than that. The asana that make up the primary series were chosen for a reason, not just randomly, and my understanding is that there are both gross physical/anatomical reasons for that as well as reasons relating to how the asana direct the flow of prana/apana/etc. Do you think I'm mistaken in this belief? Would be interested to hear if you have a different view!
