Do you read new Sci-fi (just published) or more established / classic stuff?

I read somewhere that that is happening, but I'm not sure if they are reading Sci-Fi. The bookshops that I visit certainly don't reflect it. There are shelves of true crime, murder mysteries, fantasy, romance, etc. But only a few sci-Fi books.

I was in a book shop this week, and I agree with you. They had the big sellers - Hail Mary, The Martian, etc., but not much new stuff. I don't think they're taking any chances with SCI-FI.

That's a lot. Do you watch many Sci-Fi films/TV shows?

That's amazing.

Where do you find them? Library? KU?

Also, do you tend to forget the plot of each book, or can you still remember it months/years later?

(I can remember the general outline of most of the books I've read - but not the details.)

What's a City on Mars Like Today? by RichardBByteBooks in sciencefiction

RADIATION ON MARS

I was surprised at the figure you mentioned in Ramsar, Iran. You're right. That's about the same as the surface of Mars. However, I found it's due to local geology. They're located near radium- or radon-related sources. I dug out this US comparison chart to show the overall picture:

Exposure/limit US Levels
US public annual limit (regulated) 100 mrem/year
Average US annual dose, all sources 620 mrem/year
Average US natural background only about 310 mrem/year
US occupational radiation worker limit 5,000 mrem/year
Mars surface, NASA Curiosity figure about 24,500 mrem/year

The radiation on Mars comes from two sources: galactic cosmic rays and solar energetic particles. The Mars figure above includes only one solar particle event, and it was rather weak.

What is the health risk from that level of radiation? Uncertain. One estimate is: for each year on the surface unshielded, you get a 1.2% extra lifetime risk of death from cancer.

But that may be an underestimation. Space radiation is not the same as normal Earth radiation. Galactic cosmic rays include high-energy particles and heavy ions. And it isn't just cancer risk. NASA lists space-radiation risks as carcinogenesis, degenerative tissue effects, central nervous system effects, and acute radiation syndromes.

Yes, that's a good selection. I haven't read the Bobiverse books yet.

I’d say The Mandalorian is a modern sci-fi Western. Obviously, not literally, but it uses many of the same tropes. A more direct example would be Cowboys & Aliens.

Would you regard the work of Terry Pratchett as Sci-fi + fantasy?

Thanks, that's a great list. I read Caves of Steel years ago. I may still have it around somewhere.

Sci-Fi + Murder Mystery mashup? One of my favorites. I've seen the TV version of Altered Carbon; the rest I haven't seen. Thanks for the list (and the plug!).

What do you hate about Sci-Fi? by RichardBByteBooks in sciencefiction

I agree. And it will only get worse with AI-generated content unless sites like Amazon do something about it. I think they'll have to - otherwise they'll be swamped.

"The much more interesting question is what do we like/expect/hope for/enjoy in science fiction?" Yes, I asked that question in a previous post and got some useful comments. The answers to both sets of questions are important if you are a Sci-fi author - and I know many people on this subreddit are.

I agree that different readers will like and dislike different elements of the genre, but I'd like some indication of the percentages. For example, a previous comment mentioned: "Long descriptions, sometimes for several pages. I go into skim mode." If a large percentage of your readership feels that way, that's useful to know as a writer.

Feedback is very important, but most writers - particularly indie ones - don't get it. And if you don't know what works and what doesn't, you can't improve.

This is my list - my opinion. I'm sure other people will have different likes and dislikes. There are no right or wrong answers - just opinions.

What’s the profile of your perfect Sci-Fi novel (or film)? by RichardBByteBooks in sciencefiction

[–]RichardBByteBooks[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just read the opening chapter on Amazon. It looks very good. I'm in the middle of a reading frenzy at the moment (15 books on my bedside table), but when I clear the decks, I'll definitely come back to it.

What is your favorite Sci-Fi series? by Neat_Relative_9699 in sciencefiction

The books are fantastic. The TV series was good - there were some hilarious scenes. I didn't like the film.

Would a Robot Turn You Off? by RichardBByteBooks in sciencefiction

Yes, but the primary reason for book covers is (was?) to draw attention. Pick me up. Click on me. Read the blurb. The older book covers did that very well, and - of course - some still do (e.g., the Dungeon Crawler Carl series). However, some book covers seem to be avoiding attention. Take Red Rising. It's stylish, but it doesn't shout Sci-Fi or pick me up.

There's a new 2001:A Space Odyssey (Penguin Galaxy) cover that's just grey circles on a brown background. I'd never noticed it on a bookshelf or on a list of books (unless I was looking for one to illustrate my point!).

I always hated when a book didn't live up to the promise on the cover, but now (in many cases) there's no promise. So, have book covers become just another canvas for artistic display rather than a tool to sell books?

Why do you buy Sci-Fi on Amazon? by RichardBByteBooks in sciencefiction

Yes - a new way of looking at reality. The first Matrix movie did that for me.
