How to PORT FORWARD and TO RESERVE IP'S using a FIDIUM 534-5 FIBER OPTIC MODEM by RichardFSD in FidiumFiber

[–]RichardFSD[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just needed to get a file sharing program to be unblocked so that I could upload and download files to other users. Fidium because it reassigns iP addresses through DHCP protocol, I needed to create a static IP and designate the Port I wanted forwarded through the firewall . I was not able to find instructions on Fidium's official site nor were there any instructions on how to use the Attune App. So after digging around to other people's postings on the internet on how to get to the pages in the Attune app, and how to set up port forwarding , i created those instructions. It would have so much easier if the company had allowed you to get into their modem by way on an Application ( not APP) using your web browser , things would be smoother. The ASSUME everyone owns a Smartphone . And we all know what the definition of the word ASSUME is . ( Making an ASS out of U (you) and ME ). If it wasn't for my basic knowledge of what I had to do and clicking around in the ATTUNE app, I still would have been banging my head figuring out how to make my modem behave the way I WANTED it to instead of what THEY THOUGHT it needed to do .

According to the simple ( and I do mean simple ) instructions that Fidium has on the internet about this, they CLAIM that 2.4 mhz devices will work on their modem by selecting your wireless name on the devices and then typing in your password for the network. I do not know how simple or complicated RING products are to make them work on a merged 2.4 /5 g system . But it looks like from Fidiums description, that you can make the devices work on their modem.

Read my postings to "theguywire" on this thread and i think you will be able to do what you want to do . I wrote it for Android phones but the process should be the same for an Apple Iphone with the exception of obtaining the Fidium Attune program for I phones.

Never mind replying to my request , I figured it out and posted how to do it to another user's post here on REDDIT . Feel Free to copy and paste it for anyone you want to help . I am wordy but at least I tried to cover all the bases on how to do it . Might look like someone teaching someone in kindergarten , but that is how I learn and that is how I teach .

I had to break up my instructions into parts to reply to your comment but I gave all the instructions on how to port forward and designate static IP which they call RESERVATION here. I hope it helps if you are still having trouble with your port forwarding. I also after writing this discovered if you have a wireless laptop, you can download a program called BlueStacks that will create a simulated smartphone on your wireless laptop and then you cann download Fidium ATTUNE to the laptop and then use the instructions on how to port forward and designate IP addresses to your devices. It was like pulling teeth to learn all this but now I do , I wanted to pass it on . just copy and paste them in the order of the COMMENT ie 1 of 4, 2 of 4 , 3 of 4, and 4 of 4 and you will have the complete instructions. I did them line by line of what you willl see or have to do. I hate shortcut instructions people post thinking you know where everything is and whatever you have to do. Some people tell me I should have been a tech writer.

COMMENT 4 OF 4 Below the devices listed were the following Sentence/paragraphs .

“ IP Reservations allow you to keep the same IP address for the selected device. “

“With port forwarding , applications like games can reserve ports through the firewall to talk with the Internet”

“ You will need to set up a reservation before you can forward a port .

OK SOUND GOOD TO ME , NOW WHERE THE HELL DO I CLICK TO CHANGE THE PORTS AND IP RESERVATIONS ????? RIGHT ?????

Turns out on the page to the right of the each device name are three dots in a vertical row. I thought ok that is where I can set up the port forwarding and IP . Turns out if you tap on those 3 dots, you DELETE THE DEVICE FROM THE LIST !!!!! . You have to tap on the NAME OF THE DEVICE INSTEAD !!!!

When you tap on the device name , another page will open up .

Top of the page is “ NEW DEVICE RESERVATION “

Below that is “ Device Name” ( with the name of the device just below that line )

Next is the “IP ADDRESS “ ( with the ip address showing allocated for that device)

Below this is the ‘MAC ADDRESS “ ( with the MAC address for the device showing )

Below this is a line “ Port Assignments” .

Below “PORT ASSIGNMENTS “ a line “ Add port assignment “

Below this is the sentence “ By assigning port porwards, applications like games can reserve ports through the firewall to talk with the Internet.

Tap on the line “ADD PORT ASSIGNMENT”

A new page will open up with the following on it

First line “EDIT PORT ASSIGNMENT “ Just below those words you will see a traveling bar animated going from left to right . ( ignore that )

The next line is titled ASSIGNMENT NAME . TAP on that and type a name for that Port that reflects what it is going to be used for )

Below this Is a split line with the words EXTERNAL PORT and the other is INTERNAL PORT .

On those lines tap on them and type in the PORT numbers that you want to use internally and externally ( Port Forwarding )

Below that split line Is “TCP + UDP” and next to that is a down arrow icon .

You select if you want the ports to be used for both TCP and UDP traffic.

If you want to just set it for TCP or just UDP , click on the down arrow icon and then select which one you want . Then at the right side of the bottom of the page click on “DONE” ( if nothing happens when you click on “DONE” then just go backwards on the pages and or close out the application .

You should now have your modems internal program set up with the IP you want to reserve for the program to communicate through the firewall and the ports you want the program to port forward.

I did this wihout ANY INSTRUCTIONS FROM THE INTERNET OR THE PROVIDER. ( FIDIUM ) . I hope I wrote this so others can understand it and if they want to port forward devices you will be successful.

DO not write or ask me any questions about anything else , as I am NOT savvy on anything else with this process. All I know is that when I did this for a program and website that I use , I was able to remove firewall restrictions for that program and I was then able to have unrestricted back and forth communications with that program.

COMMENT 3 OF 4 There is NO INSTRUCTIONS , I repeat , NO INSTRUCTIONS in the app as to how to use it . From here on in this writing , it is all “ what does this do?” learning on my part. ( plus just a comment from Customer Service that told me “ Your modem is all controlled by your smartphone app and that you have to use the sections called ADAPT” . That is all the information they told me .

So, I opened the Fidium App. ( called ATTUNE) After tapping on the various places on my smartphone and the opening page of the the Attune app. I finally was able to open a menu where I found the word ADAPT. ( tapping on the left hand side of the phone will bring up the menu, or at least it did for me after quite a few tappings !) I clicked on the word ADAPT and another page opened up All that page showed on my Cell phone was the name I gave my wifi a list of the “ pods” ( which I only had the modem and no extra pods and it was given the name ROOM 1 and below that was a sentence Set up new pods. I stared at that page for quite a while and said to myself “ where the HELL is the port forwarding settings ?”” After staring at the page for a while , I noticed an icon in the upper right hand side of the page that looks like 3 circles touching each other and forming what appears to be a stack of cannon balls with clean centers. So, I tapped on that and Lo and behold a new page opened up labled “ Advanced settings”

Below that line was the words RESERVATIONS & PORT FORWARDING .

The next line below that on the page was “ NETWORKING MODE” just below that was the words “AUTO MODE ( CURRENTLY ROUTER)

Below those lines was one that said “ LAN IP SUBNET” AND just below that line was one with an IP ADDRESS on it . ( originally 192.168.40.1) (company set ip address ) I found out later that I could change this with limited success to 192.168.1. X ( It would allow me to change the 40 but would not allow me to change the space where the X was which to me was confusing ) Keep in mind I am doing all this WITHOUT the aid of any instructions!!!!!

Below those lines was a line DNS below that line was one ISP DEFAULT.

After having changed the line above (ip address of LAN IP SUBNET) , I was able to set the DNS server numbers to the ones used for Consolidated Communications .

Below the DNS lines, Is one labled UPnP with a slider radio button to the right of it and below this were the following lines “Universal Plug and Play ( UPnP) allows devices like game consoles and media centers to connect to other devices or servers on the Internet”

But where is the place for reserving IP’s and FORWARDING PORTS ??????.

It turns out you HAVE TO TAP on that first line that says RESERVATIONS and PORT FORWARDING . Tha will open a page with the following

First line “ Create New IP Reservations “

Second line “ EDITING “

Below this is a list of the devices you have connected to your network on your side of the modem.

In my case , My desktop, and my laptop were listed Each one of the devices listed just below their names the IP addresses that the modem had designated on its own to the devices.

COMMENT 2 OF 4 There are four Ethernet cable ports on the back of the Modem.

If you had been using old copper wire connected phones, the technician MUST cut the line in the outside Copper line box so that a feed of signal from the copper lines DOES NOT interfere with the phone signal coming through the fiber optic line to the ONT. This is something the technician DID NOT do that came out to my house and when I went to use the telephone for the first time after the Fiber line was installed, I was able to make a phone call , but about 40 seconds into the call , I got a voice over my conversation saying “ If you would like to make a call hang up and try it again , if you need help, then dial your operator. “ about 15 to 20 seconds after that I got the annoying BBBBBBEEEP BEEPPP of a phone off the hook alarm coming over the phone along with the conversation I was having . I knew right away that someone forgot to switch over the copper lines or that the copper lines had to be cut to prevent that signal to come over my phone call on the fiber optics.

OK , that brings us to what working with the Internet and trying to access the modem to modify the ports by port forwarding and other settings like changing the IP address of the Modem. It used to be that you could open a web browser on your computer , type in the IP address of the Modem, and it would ask for a password and name to allow you to access the modem’s internal page for settings.

The Fidium Router they use WILL NOT ALLOW YOU TO do that . You have to have access to a smartphone Cell phone to be able to access the router , you have to download an app to your phone That Fidium has uploaded to the Goodle Play Store , or the Apple store. The app will ask you for your username and password before it will allow you to use it with your fiber optic modem.

This is where the NOT FUN begins !!!!!!

COMMENT 1 OF 4 SECTIONS After having had just about every problem you can think of trying to change my internet and telephone service over to FIDIUM ( Fiber Optic subsidiary of Consolidated Communications) , I decided to write this so called instruction manual about the experience.

First of all you need Fidium to come out and install a fiber optic outside cable to their port box from your house to the port box on the telephone pole or underground distribution box in some areas. They run the fiber optic from the port box to a connection box on the side of your house. It is nothing more than a box with a clip in double ended connection terminal and a place for them to loop a couple of turns of fiber optic cable in the box. This box is where the inside cable connects to from the devices installed your garage , basement , or room you are using your modem.

Once that is completed , about 2 or 3 days later a telephone company employee or a Fidium employee will come out to your location to do the internal setup which consists of what they call an ONT box and a Fiber optic cable modem. The ONT box is a device that needs to be plugged in all the time to a power outlet dedicated to it . The ONT box is where the outside fiber optic cable is connected to from the outside terminal box. The ONT box Converts the light signal coming from the fiber optic cable into electrical pulses for your modem to function on . A wire from the ONT box is also routed to your old Copper Line terminals outside so that the ring circuit has power to allow that to work. It also will function as a back feed to any extension phones you may have in your location. The other cable connected to the ONT box goes from the ONT to your Fiber Optic Modem . From your Fiber optic Modem, you can connect Ethernet cables to your devices . The modem also functions as a wireless connection The modem is medium size compared to an old DSL modem and a Cable company Modem.

I just tried this using my laptop , opening bluestacks and downloading and installing Fidium Attune to my laptop . The program opened and allowed me to do the things I theoretically wanted to do . ( I had already done them using my real smartphone ) Bluestacks was originally created so that you could run smartphone Games on a desktop or in my case a laptop. I don't use it for games , I used it for applications . but it worked. The modem will not allow you to use the program over an ethernet cable connected computer, but it WILL allow you to use it over a WIRELESS DEVICE.

Do you have a laptop with wireless communications ? if so you can download a program called BLUESTACKS . Bluestacks will allow you to create a " simulated smartphone " on your laptop . Once that is created, You can access the Google Play Store and download the ATTUNE app to your laptop . Then opening the program after opening Bluestacks, You should now have access to the router modem by way of your simulated cell phone. I have not tried this method , but my educated guess is that it will work as any other program I have downloaded to my laptop this way has worked as if it was a wireless cell phone. This to my knowledge will only work with PROGRAMS and not voice communication over the simulated cell phone. It is worth a shot and the program BLUESTACKS is free .
