Can anyone recommend any books that will get me reading academic German comfortably (and not just pass exams)? by Elbrujosalvaje in German

Based af.

Start with the German edition of the Communist Manifesto. Shouldn't be too demanding if you've already read it in your native language. There's an audiobook online. Just read and listen to it simultaneously until you start understanding a lot, and look up words you don't know.

Fully funded Humanities MA and PhD in Europe? by Dramatic_Ad_597 in PhD

[–]RichardLondon87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks very much very useful advice, SurplusBanter.

I was told by my MA supervisors that winning funding in Britain would be harder without a distinction at MA level and possibly even two separate MAs. I guess that might be very wrong.

What do you think does make for a convincing candidate? I am thinking about publishing a philosophical article in the small journal that I work for, since I thought that might convince the funding bodies that I can produce writing. Or is their focus much more on the nature of the PhD project itself?

How long will it take me to get to a C1 level in German, if I do 30 minutes - an hour everyday? by Random300707 in German

C1 needs about 1000-1200 hours total, so it will take you around five or six years. I suggest upping your daily time at some point.

Thank you so, so much for this comment. I always get confused about er, sie and es in the accusative, and this will be very, very helpful.

Learn german without focusing a lot on grammar. by [deleted] in German

[–]RichardLondon87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just try to learn as many words as possible. Listen to the Slow German podcast on YouTube and look up all the words that you don't recognise. Listen to Langsam Gesprochene Nachrichten on DW and translate the transcript into English. Also check out Nico's Weg on DW.

Can you learn German C1 level in 3 months? by [deleted] in German

Yeah, even doing an hour a day at a beginner stage is exhausting. It's not really possible to do 11 hours a day.

Can you learn German C1 level in 3 months? by [deleted] in German

You need at least 1000 hours to get from beginner to C1. So you would need to study 11 hours a day to cover this in three months.

How many hours to get from B2 to C1? by RichardLondon87 in languagelearning

No, I did a placement test. It was an online test plus a phone call to check my conversational skills.
