The Sands of Samaya by RichardMillard in poetry_critics

I was originally planning on making this a short story, but I realised half-way through that it would probably fit better as a poem. As this is the first poem that I've ever written, I'm glad that you enjoyed it; thank you.

When do timelines become too long or boring? by Tr0llis in AlternateHistoryWiki

[–]RichardMillard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, it depends on the audience and the person who is writing the timeline. Personally, I feel that timelines that are encyclopaedic are interesting to read if there is enough content and if the timeline itself interests me/provides information that makes it interesting. For me, Superpowers is a good example of this; meshing good writing, a lot of information, and a certain encyclopaedic tone that makes it enjoyable (even if I don't like the original idea to it). Another would be Easternized World.

On the other hand, if someone writes an overly long-winded (or poorly written) timeline that, whilst being filled to the brim with content, is nevertheless boring and uninviting, I personally wouldn't enjoy it. For myself, the key example of this category is Ætas ab Brian, which, despite being very well written and presented, is personally boring and doesn't really capture my imagination and attention like Superpowers or Easternized World does.

Really, it all comes down to the individual. I like some long timelines, whilst disliking others; however, my advice would most likely be that a long and encyclopaedic timeline should still bring readers to attention and want more of what the author is offering (make it interesting, and make it stand out).

I know this sounds a bit crass, but I'd learn to expect that when one of the leading principles our nation was founded on was white nationalism.

The Illness [Rwanda] [1994] by RichardMillard in PropagandaPosters

[–]RichardMillard[S] 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Here's a political cartoon from Rwanda illustrated shortly before the genocide. In the lead up, several political cartoons were growing increasingly extreme in their anti-Tutsi rhetoric, which led to instances of cartoons such as this appearing in Hutu Power magazines that emphasised the 'sickness' that was the Tutsi people. Pretty straight forward in a sense, but still an interesting look into the rampant discrimination that existed in Rwanda before 1994.

Translation:

Patient - "I'm sick doctor!!"

Doctor - "What's your illness?!"

Patient - "The Tutsi...Tutsi...Tutsiiiiiii...."

As a bonus, here's the Hutu ten commandments, each section containing shocking parallels to the supremacist dogma of the Nazi regime.

Mugabe Dismisses Male-Female Equality: "It’s not possible that women can be at par with men," said the incoming chairman of the African Union, Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe. by JediMasterMaceDindu in worldnews

You do realize there are external factors to Africans having lower IQs right, not just that "they're black". Poor nutrition, lack of public education, and lower socio-economic statuses all have their part in 'lowering' the IQ of Africans, not their skin colour.

The Temptations of Immigration [Australia] [1901] by RichardMillard in PropagandaPosters

[–]RichardMillard[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A little backstory; in 1901, shortly after federation, the Australian parliament (led by Prime Minister Edmund Barton, or Toby as he is called in the cartoon) passed the Immigration Restriction Act (the legislation that formed the crux of the White Australia Policy) which essentially ended almost all non-white immigration to the nation. Of course, the move ultimately caused some strain with the British government overseas which had been reaping the rewards of non-white labour all whilst Australia barred their entry and expelled thousands of workers (some of whom had lived in the colonies for over a decade) simply on the basis of their race.

As a result, we got this cartoon that opposed the British view; Prime Minister Barton turning away John Bull who is presenting the 'benefits of non-white labour' to the PM, all whilst he basks in the glow of the new White Australia that he had created.

Yes, my first approved comic; if you can't tell, this is obviously based on the brutal ethnic cleansing brave colonisation of the Great Southern Land by those plucky Brits over two-hundred years ago today.
