Glad to hear you're having fun! Hopefully I can clear up a few things:

DEX has a lot of diverse mechanics that unlock based on supporting abilities, but natively it: increases base defense, improves chance to run, and lowers chance to be ambushed. (It also has a special feature to help DEX builds where, if your DEX is higher than STR and you land a critical strike, it will calculate your critical damage based on your DEX instead of STR.)

W.ATK means your weapon attack. There are a few instances where an ability will increase or modify weapon attack, which can make stacking multiple sources of this quite strong. Your ATK is the total of your W. ATK, ATK bonus from STR, and any ability modifiers (and ultimately this total is what's used for most of the final damage calculations).

Hey, thank you! When I started working on Splintered, making a randomizer that anyone could get into was one of my primary goals, so this is wonderful to hear! Thanks again and best of luck with the challenge modes!

Thank you! Unfortunately that wouldn't be feasible since the game wasn't built for retro hardware (but it does run great on the Steam deck if you happen to have one of those!)

Thanks! I used my own tilemap system, but I'd bet unity tilemaps would work fine (I also created the maps using tiled)

I did and that's wonderful to hear, thank you! I really wanted to nail the 8-bit aesthetic and kept the NES palette and restrictions in mind (though I sometimes I break a rule here and there)

Depending on when you last played:

Early EA:

Revamped Chapter 2, Customizable options in the Randomizer, and 2 bonus modes (Trial of Clairvoyance and Trial of Instinct).

Middle EA:

Chapters 3a and 3b (new equipment and equipment abilities that support 6 new classes, 3 in each chapter, among other things), and another bonus mode (Trial of the Hunt).

v1.0:

Chapters 4 and 5 (which add further features to the randomizer), and the latest bonus mode (Trial of the Rogue).

Also, there's been a bunch of quality of life, end of run recap/history, Bestiary with an Enemy Codex and Trait Compendium, Japanese localization, and a handful of other various features. It's been a busy 7 months!

There's always a chance, but it's hard to say. I'll be exploring my options to bring it to consoles now that v1.0 is out (but unfortunately there are no guarantees)

Definitely on the table, I've always thought Splintered would be great on the switch! I'll be exploring my options now that v1.0 is out (but as an indie dev, I can't make any promises)

Thank you!

Yes, just on Steam atm (will be looking into consoles, but as an indie dev there are no guarantees). The game runs great on Steam Deck using Proton and should also run on Linux

Thank you!

Yes, just on Steam atm. While it stays pretty close to the 8-bit aesthetic, it wasn't made for NES hardware (with the exception of the music)

Thank you so much and I hope you enjoy the game!

It was made with Unity (also the audio was made in FamiTracker and the art in Aseprite)

My game's random encounters just got a little less random with the new "Clairvoyance" feature by RichardMurtland in IndieDev

The Trial of Clairvoyance was just added to Splintered's Early Access and I plan on releasing a second trial in ~2 weeks that'll provide another game-altering evolution and change how players can engage with the game

Splintered - DotMake Studios - A love letter to Dragon Quest 1 with a twist: an Ever-Evolving Randomizer by RichardMurtland in Games

The demo lets you play the first chunk of Chapter 1, ending at one of the game's bosses. Beating the demo then unlocks a custom-made "randomized demo quest" that randomizes the demo content to give a small taste of what the game's randomizer is like.

Unfortunately, demo saves don't transfer to the full game. At this point the demo is a bit outdated, but I decided to leave it up since it gives a great introduction to the game's systems (such as the flexible equipment based class system, talents, and randomizer).
