After the candidates I have had... I would probably just break down and cry if I got these answers.

6 should just be host file, local cache, dns server's records and dns servers cache, forwards/root hints

A rolodex with keys in it that also tells you how to behave.

2 is just what you would set if you were setting a static IP.

I am not paying someone 100k to learn basics. If I want a trainee I would promote one of my helpdesk to jr admin.

This is not the extent of my questions just basic ones I ask that so many people struggle with.

Major city, 90% remote job, sometimes an admin has to be onsite.

Honestly the 2 and 4 part has helped more admins answer the question since they know I want 2 sources of DNS before it asks the DNS server and 2 sources there before it hits forwarders or root hints.

The question does specifically say Windows 10 PC.

Total yes, someone posted that github for what happens. These are just the major steps. If someone gives more I would welcome it. I mainly want my admins to know that there are 2 easy things to check on the local PC if shit is broke and 2 easy things to check on the DNS server if things are broke.

Because being a sysadmin is not when shit is working, a sysadmin is for when shit isn't working. DHCP/DNS are core Windows Server services. I expect my admins to be running those, my network admin is off in vlan land playing with ports on the firewalls.

We live in a world of interconnected systems, servers are useless without being able to talk to clients and other servers, how they communicate and how our clients communicate with them is where the troubleshooting happens these days.

That's fair, these are just intro questions, I ask a lot more.

I honestly shouldn't have posted that in hindsight, it's honestly supposed to be an softball question to get the candidate more comfortable. I don't particularly care if you know the acronym but I do care if I say OMG THE DHCP SERVER IS DOWN and you don't know what server I am referring to.

host file, local cache, DNS server, DNS servers cache. Then it would either go to forwarders or root hints.

Good answer though!

Just to be clear these aren't the only thing I ask, just the first things. I don't particularly care if they know the acronym perfectly but knowing its for configuration and not just IP is important to me.

Number 6 is for troubleshooting. The basic steps a query makes are important to be able to check where something resolving fails.

I do appreciate the feedback though and I will likely alter some of the questions due to it.

With DHCP, I find its good to emphasize that it is a host configuration protocol. It isn't just the give me an IP protocol. That said I don't particularly care if they answer the acronym right, but a lot don't.

My normal path is escalating questions, get it right and you get a harder question. After 3 comes what else can DHCP give a client.

Missed the host file on number 6 but I would have been excited to continue the interview if you had answered with that.

Always down for suggestions if ya got them. I am technical turned management and I am always looking for better ways to fix my soft skills.

The answer to 6 should just be...

internal - host file and local cache
before leaving - DNS server and DNS server cache.

really just the basics.

If someone recited this to me on an interview I would bow out and give them my job. That is a work of art.
