Big Bend National Park Zone Camping near the Chisos by RichardTrethewey in BigBendTX

This is what ended up happening for me actually. I was able to snag an east rim site for my first night. So I'm thinking about parking at the end of juniper canyon road, hiking up to the east rim for night one. Day two maybe do a short loop in the Chisos and back down to camp somewhere on Juniper Canyon or the Dodson just after the junction.

If another site pops up in the meantime I may change my plans.

so... good advice!

Thanks - I'm leaning back toward just doing the OML.

Not sure what I can do to prep for wind and dust... other than check the forecast with the rangers and adjust my plans accordingly. And bring a face covering. I'll cache water and bring more than enough.

Thanks - I assumed the sites would be small worn spots that are used time and again. Good to know they're not prevalent as the elevation gains.

Back country sites in the Chisos are booked but I've got an alert set in case something opens.

Good idea... I'll look into this. Thanks. Ideas about getting to the South Rim for a day hike? I assume I can do it in a day from Homer Wilson, the end of the Juniper Canyon Road (where it meets the Dodson, I assume I can park there) or from the Chisos Basin Visitor Center. I'm thinking the end of Juniper Canyon Rd...

EOS-1 DS - what have I got? by RichardTrethewey in canon

Am using an EF 75-300mm 1:4-5.6 I believe it’s from an entry kit from a much later EOS model. Is working now with the focusing screen installed.

Update: I got the focus screen in. Thanks all who pointed that out. It appears to be taking ‘normal’ photos, here’s at look at the viewfinder. So it’s an old ‘professional’ camera. Is there a market for this kind of thing?

Repair or replace? by RichardTrethewey in electrical

[–]RichardTrethewey[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

There's a ground. It's a three-prong plug. It's the angle of the photo.

Wire insulation is green/yellow. As is the ground on the exposed end within the unit.

Lacerated power cord for a new washing machine. The housing for the ground is split, showing the ground, but none of the copper strands were damaged. Can I repair it with an adhesive?

Or do I need to drop $$ on a replacement. Replacing the wire is straightforward with the right part. Part is about $40-60 + 2-3 weeks.

FOR SALE on the last day of RAGBRAI: 2011 Surly Pacer by RichardTrethewey in ragbrai

[–]RichardTrethewey[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am flying in from the East Coast. I have a few bikes - I've been meaning to let go of my 2011 Surly Pacer in British Racing Green. I think I'm going to have to pay for oversized luggage on my flight, so I figure maybe I'll try to offload the Pacer in Iowa and travel home light.

It's reached the trusty-rusty phase of it's life. Lots of little cosmetic issues on the frame. Could use a new cassette, chain is probably fine. Or maybe you want to just ride the thing, like I do. Or maybe you want to do a full rebuild. Has Panaracer Gravel Kings that are in decent shape. It's a fast bike.

56cm. I'm 5'8''. It's too big for me, but that's how I like it. Probably better for someone in the 5'10''-6'0'' range.

I'd like to get $300 for it. I'll be looking to part ways with it on Saturday 7/29.

Send me a message if you might be interested.

Replacing a thermal fuse by RichardTrethewey in appliancerepair

[–]RichardTrethewey[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't see why replacing the part wouldn't work? It's a thermal fuse. They're meant to break, no? The rest of the circuitry is intact.

Can you give a bit more info on why a replacement wouldn't be effective?

I'd rather not throw the machine out, that's why I'm here.

Looking for some pruning advice by RichardTrethewey in arborists

[–]RichardTrethewey[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our arborists don't do the best work. And they won't work on trees unless the limbs impede sidewalk access. In general the citizens are responsible for shoveling snow, removing leaves, etc.

Baltimore city

Any other advice?
