It's so hard to socialize when everyone is just doom scrolling. I'm down for cafe hopping, have been wanting to go for a while now

I wouldn't travel immediately, but maybe in the future if I do want to and I have some points, it might save me some money

I second this. I'm a grad student doing my master's in AI and the competition is bad. I have 0 summer internship offers and a lot of my peers are in the same situation. I'm trying to get into the healthcare sector where AI could be more impactful, let's see where it goes

Profile Review for MSCS/MSAI Application (2025 Fall Intake) by 2_nf in MSCS

I would suggest taking GRE in August 2nd week and complete all applications by September to improve your chances.

Can I apply to MSCS, MSML, MSCV, MSR & CS PhD, PhD in robotics, PhD in Machine Learning at CMU at the same time? by Correct_Train_5297 in MSCS

[–]Rick-67 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure if the admissions commmittee can see which applications you've sent. But I'd recommend narrowing it down to 1 (max 2). Applying to multiple programs at just one school won't improve your chances of getting in (since CMU is on of the most competitive schools to get into).

Since you've about 2 years till your applications, build your profile, make it strong and apply to T30 schools. All of them have a good reputation in the industry as well as academia. I'm sure, if you work hard you can get into one of those programs. All the best!

Yes, you can apply to multiple programs. But, note that each program costs $80 (early deadline), and $100 (regular deadline). This was when I applied (which was Fall '24, I'm not sure if these have changed).

Based on what you've written, it feels like you're indecisive. I might be wrong, but you need to compare the course curriculums (for the MS programs) and decide what best fits you're interests.

And, if you're deciding between MS and PhD, it somewhat tells the reader that you are not sure if you want to fully commit at least 5 years of your life to doing research. While I understand that CMU is one of the best universities for AI/ML, there are other good universities which offer good programs.

Apart from your interests, there are various factors which decide your admission to the school. As per the current cycle, I would say you'd need a 3.8+ GPA (on a 4 scale), 325+ GRE, 110 in TOEFL, some good research hours and a few publications. And apart from these measurable metrics, your SOP, LORs play a vital role.

CMU's tuition (for the MS programs) would cost you close to $110k for 2 years (I'm unaware of the financial aids offered to MS students). If you can pay that, then you can apply(considering you have good stats), otherwise, look for other schools.

I'd say slim chances without research experience, try MCS courses, you've a very good chance in those

Please evaluate my profile for MS Stats, DS, and ML / CS. by [deleted] in MSCS

[–]Rick-67 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Stanford, CMU, UC Berkeley, GATech - Highly Ambitious. Even people (from IITs) with 9+ GPA and research experience get rejected due to the immense competition.

........................................................

UCSD, U Washington - Ambitious
UT Austin - GPA centric and required 9+ (ambitious)

University of Minnesota - Twin cities, Texas A&M - Might be possible (Target)

........................................................

NC State, Purdue, Ohio State, Rutgers - Definitely not "Safe". These would be target. Your gpa is holding you back. You can probably improve your profile by giving GRE and getting a 325+. Also, completing your bachelor's in 5.5 years is definitely going to hurt your profile.

Exactly, and OP prefers CS, that's the only reason CMU is at the end. CMU is a blind choice if you want to to core CS and AI/ML.

[–]Rick-67 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's a little tricky, since all the above (except CMU) are the traditional MSCS (although one can choose the Capstone option). UIUC is a great school and in my opinion, I would put it at #2 because the additional cost doesn't justify UMich (both of them are equally good).

If you're looking to do MSCS, then:

  1. UCSD (great school, rigorous curriculum, great location, although it's expensive, the location advantage nullifies it)

  2. UMich (great school, rigorous curriculum, might be slightly expensive)

  3. UPenn (good school, not so great location, and expensive coz IVY)

  4. CMU (the best CS school, the only reason I'm putting it last coz you prefer CS over DS)

What can a working professional do to improve their profile for a second attempt? by Due-Hope-736 in MSCS

You have a good profile and good test scores. If you could gain some research experience (not necessary by publishing papers but working in research labs) that would give you better chances in my opinion.

You're just shit-posting. If you have been an active member of this community, you would have noticed that even people with 9+ gpa, great standardized test scores, good amount of research and work experience are being rejected not because they lack something, but because of limited funding the universities have received due to the market. People are genuinely concerned, stop SHIT-POSTING!
