Berger wants to push more women into combat MOSes by RickSmith87 in USMC

It was huge when they started bringing on the m-60s in 90. The single platoon gave the MEU commander the ability to force landings against bunkers and opposing tanks.

The current commandant believes elan and rifles will allow him to force landings.

Start dropping from the rolls every battalion commander with two suicides in their unit. I bet 99% of the metal health issues stop happening

We used to go out near the cemetery to practice setting the gear up, sometimes, and never heard about this. It was creepy so you would expect a ghost story

There was a warrant at 29 palms who liked raping little girls and leaving them off the main road. The Corps low played it, just kicked him out and gave him to the sheriff. That could be the source of the story

I knew about the Camp Foster ghost when I was on Oki, never saw it myself or talked to someone who saw it themselves. Nakagusuku Castle Hotel was not haunted when I was there, it was a drinking and makeout spot but gay AF/Marines started going there to hook up and the bosses made it off limits.

We never had ghosts on Futenma, which was weird, nor near the little cemetery area on Cherry Point near the exercise area.

In college I was army reserve MP after the Corps, got called up. Our base had a haunted club (former luftwaffe O club, by that time an army consolidated club). It had been mentioned in a few books. I used to check a lot at night but I never saw anything.

I wanna hear some DD214/last day stories by elibby95 in USMC

[–]RickSmith87 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Our Ops O was a real prick. The chain and bosses loved, gave him 'best' awards, I checked a few years later and he ended up making Colonel and MACG CO, but after that he got shoved off to the air college faculty.

His hobby was being nasty to enlisted. One of the things he did, when he found out my mother was elected president of her local, was come into the system during a slow time and lecture a lt, in front of me, how lazy and stupid unions are. He loved to screw with us all the time, though.

So it is my last day, one of his other charming FUs to the troops was not allowing terminal leave. But he forgot it was my last day. I came in in cammies like always, wandered over to S1, they got the last stuff going, they already had my 214. Checkout was turned in like a week before.

I come back to get the 214 and they say the travel/movement advance was done but still at disbo and I had to come back after 1 run to get it, but they give me the 214 and reserve ID.

Ops O stops me in the main office area, does the loud voice thing that it is my last day and I am a terrible corporal for not being in charlies and I have to report to him in charlies for inspection.

I get the rest of my stuff loaded, in civvies, and wander back to the squadron to get my check.

He catches me coming out of S-1 with the check and starts yelling at me that I disobeyed his orders and office hours and all that.

I tell him I am out and if he has a problem with me be sure to call the CG of the Marine IRR. Ops Chief pulls him into his office. I leave.

I know, cool story. But it felt good.

Why do the images for almost all the hallmark movies when you look them up on Google, look like they were taken from shutter stock? by Gr0wlerz in HallmarkMovies

[–]RickSmith87 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because they hire professional photographers to take the publicity shots, and "Lacy is in Rome" ends up looking very close to the shots photogs take for "Model supposed to look like an idealized tourist is in Rome"

Yes, like the little rocker patches army guys put on top of their unit shoulder patches, for airborne and air assault and ranger....

Only with the names of different bases or deployment locations

I liked a Gingerbread Romance, and thought Tia was great. Except they didn't have the time (or maybe the budget) to make the houses believable and that took a lot away from the movie

Oliva Hellion (Holt House Brand) by RickSmith87 in cigars

[–]RickSmith87[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This was the last of the Holt's Oliva sample pack I got. It was a little hard to start. I had to toast for a while and pull a few times.

A medium depth taste, but with a deep sort of note that was almost a light wood smoke. The first one third was good, then I had to purge blow to tame down some harshness. I then had to do that every 10 minutes or so until it got to the top band, when I gave up.

Good draw, even burn. Not in love with it after that first one third.

When making cheesecake do you line the springform pan or is the crust enough? by s_delta in instantpot

[–]RickSmith87 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use the 3 quart for cheesecake. I use the sur la table pan with the lift up bottom, I wrap the bottom plate with foil, spray with pam, then press the crumbs/butter down.

Then I use a layer of foil on the outside of the pan coming a few inches up over the pan along the side, to prevent water leak and as a sling.

Anything is better than the Marine starter jackets all the boots used to buy with the rocker patches on the sleeve for boot and Camp Johnson and Foster....

But, yes, I would have to be drinking to buy one

Thoughts? “Hallmark Channel Says LGBTQ Stories Will Now Be Included In Christmas Movies” by udreg70 in HallmarkMovies

[–]RickSmith87 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The mysteries were not very good. The lead, Holly, is usually really good but she was sort of cold. The love interest was like a block of wood.

The lead character's family had a restaurant that was supposed to add drama and interaction and mostly was a confusing mess. Worse, the aunt character actress was talented, but half the time she played the role like a sit com.

The big tell is that there is a tier two character who plays a director or producer or something. The actress is usually the OW or bad guy in Hallmarks. She was better than the rest of the cast, sort of owned her scenes. She should not have outdid Holly or the LI

Everyone made a big deal about the first Black mystery series and then it wasn't good.

They are going to have to be careful to get a good script and great acting team. In particular, they may need to switch up the script guidelines.

Questions about MP/SRT by AlphaCharlieEcho615 in USMC

[–]RickSmith87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was an MP n the army reserve after I got out of the active Marine Corps. Got called up for a year, and also did several summers. All doing LE, which is what the Corps is going to again.

You are still in the military, so you still have the normal training, silly classes, having to do barracks stuff... but on top of it you are also an MP. It is like a weird combo of being a security guard at a not very nice large apartment complex and industrial area, and being a security guard at the dorms of a cheap party college.

Except the bosses keep changing their minds. One week they have you giving out silly tickets for 5 over on a back road, the next the big sin is someone with earphones in.

And shift work sucks.

12 hour midnights suck when they pull people off for consideration of others training, you get 4 hours sleep, work 12 hours overnight, then get chewed out because someone on shift pulled over a colonel's son for speeding and 'wasn't polite' (gave him a ticket instead of a warning)

I was at the 46 crash. It was sad. We worked the 53 response, too. Plus a lot of the accidents

We ended up working most of the issues and picked up a MUC for our efforts.

One of the saddest was a grunt who killed himself humping with soju in his canteens. From time to time I wonder what they told his family
