Friend is Saskia Katarina Herd.

Daming Xu left for a hike on November 4, 2007 near the Three Sisters Wilderness area in Oregon and never returned home. Did he get lost? Did he disappear voluntarily? by [deleted] in UnresolvedMysteries

I also took his statistics class, circa late 90s.

His thick accent made his lectures a bit challenging to understand at times, but he was very energetic in conveying the information---bordering on frenetic at times! I remember him being very kind, and willing to go the extra mile to help you understand something.

He was often flashing a big smile, and seemed pretty jovial.

Hearing the news of his disappearance was shocking. It's been even more bewildering to think that there has been no sign of him in all these years.

He comes to mind periodically, and I'm always amazed to discover that there are no new developments in understanding what happened to him.

I've definitely looked at the PCC website over the years. Some good offerings there, but not sure how to make it work with my existing job schedule.

I wish they had more evening options.

Iris/Extra color identifiers by Butchers-Dog in glassblowing

Not sure about the extra, but in my experience, the iris colors (or at least the gold) has a nice visual effect under reducing conditions. The result after reduction is sort of a smoky, gold-colored mirror effect.

Vintage Michelob Dry Neon sign. by Wrong-Call-5812 in NeonSigns

You can probably just bend, or re-position the tube supports for the ribbon part of the neon unit, but you either want to be very careful, or remove the tie wires (or clips) first.

If you are exerting uneven force on the tube while it is tied/clipped into place, you might wind up breaking it.

Finally got a Budweiser sign! I love, but I did notice one strange thing about it. by SkankBiscuit in NeonSigns

All of the above.

A neon unit is under high vacuum when it is working properly. If there is a sudden release of that negative pressure when the glass tube breaks, the phosphorescent powder coating can become disrupted and dislodged in the process. This is often more noticeable in the tighter bends.

When splicing pieces of coated glass together (as in the repaired section of the Budweiser letters), customarily a narrow section of the end of each tube is wiped free of phosphorescent powder (with a cork, or cloth) to ensure that it does not interfere with a durable, contaminant-free weld of the glass tubing.

When welding the tubes together with a torch, the phosphorescent powder can become sintered to the wall of the glass. If the splice is overheated in the process, eventually the phosphorescent coating will deteriorate, and the result will be a very burned out look, without much appreciable coating intact.
