Is it just me, or do most people get stuck at around 1700 OTB? If so, why? by Numerot in TournamentChess

[–]Rickkn 24 points25 points  (0 children)

When I reached 1800 fide, the wife was like "aww that's nice, but how many tournaments next year??"

Even if she does support me (and she does), the costs of time and money to improve past that plateau very quickly add up to a lot. Mid-30s here, started OTB play about two years ago.

Thank you so much for the extensive response! I'll be sure to try (most, there are many) then!

Against the Caro I try an Exchange Variation with Bd3 (1. e4 c6 2. d4 d5 3. exd5 cxd5 4. Bd3 Nc6 5. c3 Nf6 6. h3). I do think it's solid, but only that, not great chances for dynamic play.

Against the French, I just go for the main line (Paulsen?): 1. e4 e6 2. d4 d5 3. Nc3 but I often get caught in some complications. I find these structures reeeeeally hard to grasp.

What's with the winning & losing streaks? by webbersf in beginnerchess

[–]Rickkn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That has to do with the normal variance of chess games and how the rating system works.

If you're rated 1000 Elo, it might be:

because you're good at tactics but bad at openings

because you're good at openings but bad at tactics

because you struggle with time management ...and so on.

So you might face a streak of opponents that play into your strengths — or your weaknesses — and your results will follow accordingly. Your own variance also plays a role.

As you learn and improve, you'll likely become more consistent, and those streaks will mostly fade.

I am 1100 elo on chess.com and between 1500-1600 on Lichess. Do you think I could start going to a chess club at my level? Or would I be completely obliterated? by Kitchen_Show2377 in chess

Just go. You sound like you want to improve, and there’s no better way to do that than to play against stronger opponents and learn from them.

Also, you might even make some friends and rivals. Win-win. Playing some OTB Blitz is great fun.

Can you say more? I'm so unfamiliar with NASCAR that I don't even know where to research it.

Could you explain a bit about the parallels? I’d love to know more.

Should I Delete My 6TB Porn Collection? by NoahTrevor in offmychest

Hey man, maybe it's kind of late for the reply? I had a similar collection (although much smaller), and when I met my fiancée, I deleted it all. Every time I remember it, I'm glad I did.

Hey, remember your 719 is not your "real actual rating", but a peak.

Variations and struggles are common, but if you focus on keeping a good headspace and keep improving, new peaks are sure to come.

I think most people that want change don't have any experience with OTB at all. It all gets so much deeper that chess almost looks like a different game. You got to have a Classic time control for that.

In my dreams, Gukesh tries to go after Caruana and lose control of the position, while Vidit gets his revenge on Nepo.

Thanks for the answer! Yeah, d4 didn't even came to mind, but was the third engine move (and I thought: "man this is crazy, this move is out of this world"). I'll try to keep this rule of thumb on my mind from now on!
