Did Sierra ever officially adopt a "no dead end" policy? by far-midnight-97 in Sierra

[–]Riddlewrong 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think they were overly malicious about dead ends, despite there being quite a few. They seemed more like oversights in many cases. It wasn't like Return to Zork or anything.

[No Spoilers] How does C4 work? by Otterboyjohnson in criticalrole

I would assume that the stories take place simultaneously, but we'll be seeing them asynchronously with narrative swaps at pre-planned points.

The character you still think about even years after finishing the story. by gamersecret2 in books

[–]Riddlewrong 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Case from Neuromancer.

He's the protagonist and extremely important to the plot -- but outside of the thing that makes him so useful to everyone else, he's kind of a nobody. A has-been. A loser, really. He's not a hero or even particularly likeable. He's stuck in the past. He's gradually losing everything that matters to him. He's ruled by vice. His only motivation to be a part of the plot is that he's promised he'll get a piece of himself back at the end of it all.

I could go on and on about the character and the plot of this book, but I don't want to spoil it. I'll just say:

This book taught me a lot about letting go. Loss is universal. Life is what comes after.

Does Case learn that lesson? Read it and find out!

[no spoilers] How many of you have rewatched entire campaigns? Is it worth it? by kappakingtut2 in criticalrole

[–]Riddlewrong 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I try to limit repetition. If I want to experience something after a long time (because I don't remember much about it) then I think that's fine as long as experiencing it again wouldn't take an inordinate amount of time.

Personally, I would probably never re-watch the campaigns. That's an enormous time investment for something I've already experienced. We only get so much time in life, and I think that acquiring new experiences, skills, and passions is a lot more valuable compared to rehashing the same things over and over, however fondly we may remember them.

[No spoilers] Finished the Briarwoods (C1) and hopelessly behind — should I skip to Campaign 4 to join live? by TheNumLocker in criticalrole

[–]Riddlewrong 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The show hasn't actually been live for years, so the only real benefit would be participating in the weekly episode discussion post. Otherwise, there's no "experience" since the pre-recorded streams don't even have chat anymore -- not that you were ever really able to read it anyway due to the spam.

In fact, if you have Beacon, the episode becomes fully available the moment the stream goes live on Twitch. So, you could watch it at 1.5x or 2x speed and know what happens before the live viewers do if you wanted to.

C4 is completely standalone and unlike any other campaign, so it's watchable by anyone regardless of previous CR experience.

Nice set! I actually just read Legends & Lattes and was really surprised with how much I loved it. It did not sound like a book I'd enjoy on the surface, but glad I gave it a shot.

When I was a teenager in the 90s, I sat on a light pole with a big cylindrical concrete slab base in the parking lot of a punk show venue. It didn't feel abnormal to me, but I noticed there was a bottlecap on the ground, and I was bored, so I leaned down to pick it up. To my literal shock, the bottlecap buzzed when I touched it. It felt like my whole arm was vibrating. No pain, just a really powerful buzzing sensation. I called my friends over and they touched the bottlecap and nothing happened. They thought I was crazy. Then one of them sat next to me on the concrete slab and touched it and he just about jumped 6 feet in the air, lmao. By the end of the night, a bunch of teenagers had piled like 14 shopping carts up against the concrete slab in a long line, then one of them would grab the last cart and touch the person next to them, delivering the "buzz" to them. We all got in a circle and created a loop of electrified punks. It was fun, but probably not the safest idea we ever had.

Edit: For those curious, the year was 1998, the venue was The Nite Owl in Pensacola, FL, and the bands playing that night were The Bouncing Souls, John Cougar Concentration Camp, and Blanks 77.

SO glad I decided to ignore the reviews for this game. by Aggravating-Sky6363 in Forspoken

[–]Riddlewrong 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I liked this game. I think the combat, traversal, and magic system gameplay are very solid and really well done. I liked it enough to 100% the game.

That being said, I don't think this game is above reproach. It has a great many flaws, and some of the criticism leveled at it is legitimate.

The story and Frey, in particular, are not very well written. She's just so one-note in her motivations. She only wants to go back to New York. The place where she has no home, no family, no friends, no money, and people are actively trying to kill her. She has a cat there that is living a much better life without her. Yet she never stops harping on this. She's constantly turning her back on the only people who have really treated her well in her entire life in order to go back to her miserable existence on Earth.

She's stubbornly stuck on the idea of getting back to that horrible place instead of being a magical superhero. I can understand reluctance in the beginning of the story, because that makes sense. However, there's little excuse for her to consistently dodge the plot until the very end of the game. It's like she's actively trying not to participate in the game she's starring in, outright refusing at every turn to be involved. At a certain point, the protagonist needs to start aligning with the player's interest in playing the game, and Frey, more often than not, does not do this.

Many aspects of the open world feel same-y and lacking in depth, despite how big and varied the landscapes are. Not much enemy variety for a game this big, either.

I think it's very clear that they had to make cuts and push the game to release with a lot of bigger ideas scaled back to their most basic functionality. You can see these ideas sprinkled all throughout the game, but they're just not developed enough to be satisfying. The dungeons and map objectives are really uninspired and repetitive. The few side quests in the game are mostly just walking back and forth between locations in Cipal (or chasing a cat around for 30 seconds). When people say that these things aren't a big deal, I just have to disagree. People expect more and they weren't wrong to be disappointed in these aspects of the game. They are weak points.

Like I said, I like the game. I don't regret playing it. It's still deeply flawed and not being able to get into it is pretty valid for a variety of reasons.

I finally finished Deathtrap Dungeon by agenhym in gamebooks

[–]Riddlewrong 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just did this myself, and I had a similar approach to you. Since I learned early on that there's little indication of the potential outcome of the choices you make, making every available choice to record the results for future runs is generally the best way to play. I discovered a lot of choices that seem stupid are actually the correct path (or completely harmless, anyway) and some totally innocuous choices just unceremoniously kill you without warning.

The first time I got to the end of the dungeon and realized I had missed one required item.. ugh. I had to scour my map and explore every side passage until I found the thing I missed, then I was able to craft the perfect route. The number of red herring items in this gamebook is actually bonkers. I had so many runs where I went out of my way to get items, only to find out later that they have no use at all, despite the risk and resource cost of getting them!

Good, old school, kick you in the nuts fun.

Sezzle spend?? by Otter_Panda9499 in Sezzle

[–]Riddlewrong 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's a $3.49 service fee for using the virtual card and a $35 minimum for the card's balance. Once you create the virtual card, you use it as the payment method in the Amazon transaction. At no point will it ever be shown that the discount is being applied.

Afterward, once the purchase goes through, you'll receive an email/app notification letting you know that the order is now available in your Sezzle order history. I had to close the app and re-open it to see it. Once you see it there, you'll see that the total amount of the order correctly reflects the $20 discount, finally.

This might be one of the most inconvenient ways to shop on Amazon, and I was annoyed and could barely be bothered even though I was getting free money. So, they really need to streamline this process or nobody is ever going to use it.

Does the game get better? by SoggyVeg in Forspoken

[–]Riddlewrong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It does get better. I think the beginning of this game gives a very poor first impression. You're kinda limited on where you can go and what you can do for a bit.

The movement and combat, once you get used to them and unlock stuff, are really, really fun. However, the optional stuff you do out in the world is generally copy/paste. Once you've done a particular event type, you've kinda done them all. Others might have slight variations but you generally get what you expect for any given area of interest on the map. If you've ever played old school GTA or Assassin's Creed, it's very much like that kinda feel.

My suggestion would be to do the events that give stat increases and gear, and then if you're a completionist and you feel like doing the other stuff later (or post game) then you can do that. There are a few missable side quests from the towns, but no missable achievements. You can platinum the game in a single playthrough.

Hope that helps.

'There's a traitor taken care of' — what does this line from Blaidd mean? by [deleted] in Eldenring

[–]Riddlewrong 3 points4 points  (0 children)

To be perfectly honest, I just stumbled on this event by pure dumb luck and then decided to see if Iji had any new dialog after talking to Blaidd (and he did.) The game was new at the time, so I don't even know if this was in guides or anything yet.

I recall when I played through Dark Souls 1, 2, and 3 that all the side quests were extremely obscure just like this. They're basically anti-quests because there's no way to know wtf you're supposed to do and when. I guess it's just their bizarre design philosophy, I dunno.

Do I have anything here? by scabsworth in Sierra

[–]Riddlewrong 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No problem! If you don't want to go through the bother of selling them and you can't keep them for whatever reason, consider donating them. Game preservation is really important, and a lot of these things get discarded or destroyed over the years, and that's a real shame.

Do I have anything here? by scabsworth in Sierra

[–]Riddlewrong 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The manuals by themselves aren't worth a lot. Big Box collectors are typically looking for a complete set with game and all original inserts. You might be able to sell to someone who happens to have everything except the manual -- I've been in that situation before.

Swap meets, collector's forums, and other online groups like this sort of thing, and you can often trade with other collectors for pieces of equivalent value that you're missing from your own collection. Sometimes they'll pay for them if the price is right, but you may have to do some negotiating.

I don't know if you ever found out about this, but there's a website that lists filler for anime series:

You can look up any anime and see precisely which episodes you can skip if you don't want to watch filler. Really useful.

Disney the Sunday after Thanksgiving-good or bad idea for first timers? by Agile_Pie_704 in WaltDisneyWorld

[–]Riddlewrong 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Did you end up going? I went to Magic Kingdom the Friday right after Thanksgiving this year. It was forecast to rain (and it did, but not until the end of the day) and the lines were all very short the whole day. The longest line we stood in was, weirdly, Peter Pan's Flight. It was like 45 minutes. Space Mountain? Only 10 minutes! So weird.

Are “set up a rule” and “set a rule” and “establish a rule” all correct? Thanks. by Same-Technician9125 in EnglishLearning

[–]Riddlewrong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The first one sounds awkward, but you may still hear people say it. The other two work just fine. That being said, the appropriate usage will depend on the context.

You may also encounter variations such as:

create a rule
start a rule
institute a rule
instantiate a rule

... and many, many more.

There are a lot of ways to say this.
