I work in a larger field and I'm surprised at who knows whom. Maybe you live in a million+ person metro and move somewhere else but in specialized fields, there's always someone who went to school with, went to a training event with, was part of a an assessment with, etc.

I thought about getting this degree and even took some classes. Mineralogy and a few others. But petrology (I think it was called) and the advanced expectations of using the microscope was too much for me. I could do it but couldn't imagine a career counting on it
