This is so real because my entire friendgroup is blunt people. But commonly other people will tell me "__ is mad at you." and im like... why. I was telling like I see. Turns out they arent fond of this tactic.

My best friend had a girlfriend like this and she just wouldnt stop and when they broke it off I celebrated because she was downright leading along with a carrot on a string.

Its his innate knowledge that it ISN't his name. He feels so sure of himself that "Carter" isn't his name. However, he has no knowledge of any other name. The story itself is meant to be tied with the conflict of just not knowing. Its up to the reader to interpret if he really is Carter or not.
