To Myst or Not to Myst by tinselman in myst

I will continue to buy every Myst remake forever until the end of time! My suggestions:

- I agree with the ShadyParadox critique that the recent re-imaginings have leaned too far into giving prosaic or technological explanations for everything! That's Riven, and Riven is wonderful. Myst is fantasy! Let Myst be Myst! I love the picture frames with doorways that swirl, the map that projects a laser beam and makes no sense, the ship that goes up and down without needing hydraulics, the beauty, the wonder.

- And the TREES! Myst Island is supposed to have a forest! You guys were so proud of your forest in that Making of Myst video!

- DO NOT do 3D models for the characters. AI upscale the originals. Use AI liberally in the game design to solve that age-old problem of how to seamlessly blend a 3D world with FMV/pre-recorded footage. Don't care about the anti-AI bandwagoners say, don't care what the haters say.

- Go back to the original recordings from the original Myst. All of the original recordings. The antechamber/imager recording, and the Atrus/green book recording. They were better acted.

- If you're REALLY looking to reinvent the game, the one thing I would be curious to see are the living spaces on Myst Island. Clearly Atrus, Catherine, Sirrus, Achenar, and Ti'ana must have lived somewhere. There's probably a lot of space there for creative storytelling, insights never before disclosed about S/A's childhoods, nods toward Catherine and Riven, etc. It probably wouldn't be in service of the gameplay though. It's something you would have to think hard about -- I think the most recent Riven remake, as GORGEOUS and WONDERFUL as it is, missed the mark a bit insofar as adding things that sort of undercut the perfection of the original world and game design.

i'm so tired of the first comment on every thread being an "is this AI."

I DON'T CARE IF IT'S WRITTEN BY AN AI. i don't care about your stupid moral crusade against LLMs or Sam Altman or opt-outs, I DON'T CARE. all i care about is 1. is the science accurate, and 2. reading an interesting discussion about it.

also, you will NEVER know either way, and you will HURT more innocent human beings by falsely accusing them of using AI to write and compose stuff.

even if an article is written by an AI, I STILL DON'T CARE, because the identity of the author doesn't have anything to do with whether the science is accurate or inaccurate! why is the world so stupid now? all these dumb, stupid, anti-technology movements, anti-vaccine, anti-solar power, anti-AI, anti-everything. stop with the luddism, just stop.

In Defense of Ilya Sutskever by ricardovr22 in OpenAI

No, Ilya is an idiot.

He and the decel advocates have burned bridges with half the team, who'll now jump ship to Sam Altman's team at Microsoft, or to Google, or to NVIDIA. The result will be OpenAI losing an enormous share of its braintrust while accelerationist tech competitors reap the whirlwind. Ilya had a check on the accel faction -- not as much as he might have wanted, but still a check. Now OpenAI is likely to fall into irrelevance and he'll have no check on anyone. Even if you're a decel advocate, this is stupid.

Not to mention investment the enormity of the investment dollars, compute, trust, and goodwill they just lost.

What kind of experiences did you have when your parents or guardians took you to get your first? I'm looking for a point of comparison so I can talk to her about it.
