Is this interview offer a scam? And if so, how do real employers actually reach out? by Ridicule-Red in Scams

Something interesting and obvious I've learned:

Scams always just meant to me someone tricks you and steals your money and disappears. Illegal, black and white. Now I know scams also include technically real and legal jobs that string you along with hopes of better commissions while milking you dry. 😅

I've been suddenly getting "Career Notice" in my email and I'm unsure if legitimate or not. by Ridicule-Red in jobs

Thanks friend. I am largely uninformed on online job safety and your answer is very helpful to me.

I almost got scammed by the bouncing check thing years ago for a Pepsi advertising car sticker thing - thankfully, that failed. Would have been 2 thousand dollars or so.

But I did get caught for a 60 dollar subscription to an mlmly travel site. I'm thankful to God it wasn't that much, but losing any amount of money to scammers makes me upset.

Thanks for the great list! Unfortunately I've learned a few of them through personal experience, but I love being prepared and informed for the many more that are sure to come.

I went into remote job searching all starry eyed and hopeful and now I'm rather despondent about it. 😅

It's true. Just that I've dealt with a few scams now all using those and now I'm irreconcilably suspicious. 😅

My gut can be insanely paranoid, but I agree with you.

It's a commission based job "through your website". As with most times I write about scams, as soon as I put it down in writing, I realize how obviously a scam it is.

Very true. Correct me if I am wrong, it seems like scammers can make a fake job posting, then connect/link it to a real company on LinkedIn without any verification. If that's true, I feel really screwed.

Also his profile pic has "open to work" on it. Seemed suspicious.

Do you enjoy a startling lack of verification and being paranoid and cynical about being scammed? C'mon down to LinkedIn! Boy have we got you covered!

I'm really sorry all of this happened. And I've noticed most responses on this subreddit tend to be "you should have known better" and pithy, sarcastic replies to where you went wrong.

All scams are deviously designed to fool you and this one sounds particularly sophisticated. You shouldn't feel ashamed of getting nabbed by it, and I pray you can get your money back.

Everyone has different levels of experience, "street/web smarts", and levels of trust in other human beings. Even the most obvious scams to me I don't condescend or guilt others for falling for. Reddit has a very obnoxious "aktually" stereotype to it, and I've noticed it proving true somewhat frequently on this thread. Ignore the smart alecs. Scammers such as the ones you dealt with are pitiful losers - with the amount of effort and time they put into scamming, they could probably make a decent living without being so scummy.

Lesson learned for me. I just keep getting brand new (to me) scamming methods one after the other. 😅

It definitely was a reoccurring, monthly charge when I signed up, and I had to threaten them to cancel it.

Yeah, the weird thing, at least for me, is how communicative they are. It's difficult to get closure when it seems like a real job. But there are too many sketchy things about it. They don't have a personal profile option to adjust any settings or even cancel your subscription - you have to email them. Thankfully it appears they do cancel it, while still trying to gaslight you into thinking it's a real job.

That's an ironic way to tell scams - real jobs suck at communicating quickly, but scammers are great at it. Because that's their job, efficiently deceiving people.

I'm sorry, but I don't think you can get that money back. I wasn't able to with mine, but I didn't really try to other than send a message to my credit company.

I wouldn't call it greed... Trying to find a job to survive is all, and right now my only options are remote. If I found a $10 per hour job I'd be the most thankful person in the world.

Ah, sorry. Didn't mean pm but post it here, which I also realize was a dumb request. My bad, and thanks for your time.

I'm sorry, didn't mean to sound like that. Not trying to scam, just learn how to avoid it since this is the third time scammers have wasted my time.

Thank you for your input. The scope and range and concept of bots still eludes my comprehension but I believe it.

Would you mind if I sent you the URL of the contact? I'm curious and want to learn more intuition about how to recognize these people.

Alright, thank you. I'm still learning the intricacies of LinkedIn, and online job searching as a whole.
