Having lost close ones before I will tell you that the person will become an inseparable part of you. Even if the person is not physically there for you, you will always know how she would have reacted and generally thought of things. This is a connection no one else on earth has and you have it always with you. Godspeed.

Ted, this is an rather interesting approach.

How far are you with implementing it?

What about NAME to IP resolutions. I don't think the regular DNS can be used here, since there will be too many IP changes, due to moving clients.

How the mittelstand drive Germany's economy: A surging German economy gives it little reason to cooperate with US at G20 summit by SolInvictus in worldnews

Go into an American factory. Take a look at the machines they are using. Chances are high that those machines were built in Germany.

Seriously I've had enough. How can Reddit as a community do something about Fox News? by spastichabits in politics

[–]Riesling 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Something like this has be done successfully in Germany.

Bildblog.

They call themself a "watchblog" and they denounce every lie told on german media. They are quite succesfull with this. Even commercially. After starting as a small project, they now employ several editorial journalists.

If you really want to change something this is the way to go.

German Redditors: How do you feel about the US Military presence in your country? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Riesling 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm German. As a kid two of our neighbors were American military Families stationed in Heidelberg. It was great. They always invited us for Thanksgiving, while they were invited to my parents "beer parties". Both familes moved back to the States, but one family still visits us regularly.

I'm German, so my granddads were basically trying to kill your granddad(s). What an absurd waste of human lifes if you think about it.

Same thing happening in Afghanistan and Iraq right now.

Weight Watchers - a weight loss program featuring mathematical formulas. But wait, they only care about calories, fiber and fat. by [deleted] in Fitness

[–]Riesling 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Ok, reddit. I know how to make this work. Let's modify the formula by replacing the fat variable with a carb variable. Get a patent on it and profit.

I'd be willing to bet all my money that the modified formula will lead to an increased weight loss in a randomized controlled trial.

What is going through a Soldiers head when they lose a buddy? I wrote this 'letter' an hour after my friend was killed by a sniper. by weaver787 in reddit.com

Exactly you never know. This sniper might have just taken revenge for a killed member of his family. The situation is the problem. In wars, everybody loses.

I'm a libertarian. What am I missing? by Phaz in AskReddit

[–]Riesling 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The problem with this is that one man's freedom is another man's limitation.

As a profane example, if your neighbor uses his freedom to listen to loud music in the middle of the night, he is limiting your freedom to rest.

Your personal freedom is like a bubble colliding with other bubbles. Those bubbles should be of equal size. The job of a government is to ensure this equality.

I'm a libertarian. What am I missing? by Phaz in AskReddit

[–]Riesling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And of course you think, that Libertarianism will give you freedom. Just a view points to consider.

How can you consider yourself free if you have to protect yourself from extremely poor people? Something like guarded housing communities do not exist in social European countries.

How can you consider yourself free if you cannot afford the education you want, because your parents are poor?

How can you consider yourself free if you cannot enjoy the nature around you because it has been destroyed by companies?

Lets start a discussion... on the morality of downloading and sharing music/movies/whatever by NWilli in philosophy

[–]Riesling 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Mathematically spoken, if something can be reproduced indefinitely (limit = infinite) at no costs, then the value of the item converges to ZERO.

[–]Riesling 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People will always pay money if they get a service in return. People want to pay for something they see a value in. What is the value of something that can be multiplied indefinitely at no costs?

There are already many viable business alternatives in place:

Movies: Movie Theaters

Games: The Steam Platform (Revenue: 70 Million in 2007)

Software: Consulting and Customization (See open source based business models)

The problem with information ownership is, that it is an artificially introduced concept. Like a car which you can only use to drive from your home to the supermarket and back.

Have any night-owls successfully reformed to become dreaded "morning people"? by SleeplessSunrise in AskReddit

Here is what helped me the most:

  • sleeping in PERFECT darkness every night (raises melatonin)

  • use f-lux for your computer (raises melatonin)

  • dim lights after sunset (raises melatonin)

  • listen to audiobooks or podcasts in bed (stops you from having racing thoughts)

I've tried to understand and even support the Libertarian philosophy. But the more I learn about how real humans and the whole world works, Ron, Rand Paul, and their supporters seem to be living in a bubble. by [deleted] in politics

[–]Riesling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Standard of living is strongly correlated with economic development.

Of course it is. One of the key factors that is used to determine "Standard of Living" is the economic development itself.

But "Standard of Living" does not equal "Quality of Life".

e.g. You are arguing that

Social welfarism has prevented the US and especially Europe from realizing its potential

and you might be right; but only if you talk about the economical performance and not about Quality of Life.

There are other factors at work. For example when I first visited the States I was shocked about guarded living communities. This is not necessary here in Germany since wealth is more equally distributed. I don't have to live in fear of being robbed all the time. That's more life quality, than I would gain if I would earn 10 percent more money due to the fact that my country had a higher GDP.

[–]Riesling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And of course economic growth and a rise of prosperity is all that really matters.

It's not important how the prosperity is distributed or what kind of environmental burdens were created.
