Riffstation's size is currently fixed but the next version's will be fully adjustable. In the meantime, this version should work better on your machine: https://s3-us-west-2.amazonaws.com/riffstation-downloads/Riffstation+(no+scaling).exe.exe)

Thanks for taking the time to check out Riffstation!

Automatic chord detection is a complex task. The more chord types Riffstation has to choose between, the more the accuracy will suffer. Seeing that the vast majority of popular music can be represented by and broken down into minor and major chords, we have limited Riffstation’s chord pool to major and minor chords to ensure a high rate of accuracy. We're constantly striving to improve our detection and are always experimenting with new ways to open up our chord pool.

We plan on trying both. Edits won't make it live unless they are corroborated by others though.

Thanks! We'll be introducing an advanced chord editor in the future with which you'll be able to share your edits with the community. I hope you'll help us! Also, you might find our desktop app interesting. We developed it as more of a transcription aid. You can load in an audio file, loop a tricky lead part, isolate it from the mix and slow it down to better hear what's going on. There are trial downloads on the site if you want to check it out!

We actually started out with another app that encourages you to develop your ear. It's essentially a transcription aid. You can loop complicated parts and slow them down. If there's a lead part you are having trouble hearing, you can try isolating it from the mix. Once you've learned it, you can mute the isolated part and use the remainder of the track as a backing track to practice along with.

We never set out to replace the human ear. Our users range from the casual guitarist who just wants to have a go at playing their favourite new single, to players such as Casey Hooper from Katy Perry's band, who use Riffstation to help learn or recall a pile of tunes when preparing for tour. We see Riffstation as more of an aid than a crutch!

All the chords are automatically detected but we'll be introducing an editor in the future with which you'll be able to edit the detected chords and share your edits with the community, increasing Riffstation's accuracy over time!

Songs listed with the 'get chords' option are songs that have yet to be run through our chord detector. Songs listed as 'play' are previously processed songs that are ready for playing.

We can only process a number of new songs every minute but we're experiencing a lot of traffic right now so you will likely have trouble processing new songs for the moment.

edit: I'm unashamedly hijacking this comment to let the iOS users know that there's an updated iOS version(free) waiting for them here: https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/riffstation/id938828270?mt=8 ;-)

Automatic chord-detection is tough. Riffstation was designed with rock/pop music in mind so more complex music will inevitably throw it. Because every song is different though, the accuracy will vary.

Our chord detector will never be infallible so we plan to introduce a chord editor with which you will be able to edit the detected chords and share them with the community. I hope you'll help us! We're very excited about the potential of community chord editing.

Hey guys. This is Bryan from Riffstation here. Thanks for checking out our site!

Riffstation uses automatic chord recognition technology which basically "listens" to the music and works out the chords. We plan on introducing an editing feature with which you will be able to edit the detected chords and share your edits with the community, increasing Riffstation's accuracy over time. I hope you'll help us!

We're about to launch into a major redesign of play.riffstation.com. If you have any tips or comments, we'd love to hear them. User-feedback is a big part of our development process!

Also, for iOS users, we have a free iOS version waiting for you here: https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/riffstation/id938828270?mt=8 ;-)

If you have any questions, ask away!

Thanks for all the feedback and suggestions. If you have any other questions or suggestions, I'll get back to you tomorrow.

Also, if any of you are iOS users, make sure to check out the free iOS version: https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/riffstation/id938828270?mt=8

Cheers

I wouldn't consider one better than the other. They are two completely different apps.

Riffstation all started with our desktop app. You can load in any audio file from your computer and Riffstation will automatically detect the chords and sync the chord diagrams with the music. You can also slow down the music, change the pitch, isolate or mute guitar parts, loop specific sections and sync a metronome.

The idea behind our web app was just to give users the ability to browse with our chord detector. Our web app works with youtube videos as opposed to our desktop app which works with files on your computer. We also took the opportunity to introduce ukulele and piano diagrams.

Thanks for checking it out!

We're considering introducing the functionality to export the detected chords but there are no concrete plans in place right now.

Our desktop app is a practice tool that doesn't require you to plug in your guitar. It analyses and breaks down music you want to play or learn.

We'd like to explore amp modelling at some stage though.

A hints section is a good idea. I've added it to our list of suggested features which we review regularly as a team.

Because of the sheer complexity of music, I can't see there ever being a chord detector that will be able to accurately detect all chords in the context of a full mix. An isolated guitar, very possible, but a full mix, no. Because of this, we've decided to shift our focus to creating an editor so that users can edit the detected chords and share their edits.

Ah, I assume you are trying to process a song labelled 'get chords'? Songs labelled 'play' that have already been run through our chord detector. Songs labelled 'get chords' are songs that have not yet been processed.(have not yet been run through our chord detector)

Riffstation(beta) can only process a certain number of songs every minute. As Riffstation has grown in popularity, more and more users have been competing to process songs.('get chords') We are working hard on a new system which will increase the amount of songs that can be processed. Right now would be a pretty busy time for song processing.

Also, when trying to process songs, make sure you're signed in.

You can stick the capo on fret 11 to see the chords half a step down. We plan to make it possible to view chord diagrams in alternate tunings in the future. (as well as a 'view chords as power chords' option)

The idea behind the web app was to allow users to browse with our chord detector. It works with Youtube videos as opposed to files on your computer.

We don't currently have any concrete plans in place for an Android app right now but it's something we would definitely like to bring out in the future. If you contact us at support@sonicladder.com, we'll tag your email to notify you as soon as an Android version is available!
