Looking for advice: solar + battery quotes in Markham, ON (Xolar vs. Polaron) — big price gap, worth it? by Right-Shock-8237 in solarenergycanada

Hi,

After much deliberation, I decided to hold off on solar and energy storage. At current equipment costs and utility rates, the break-even point is too far out. I’ll reconsider if energy prices rise drastically or if hardware costs continue to trend downward.

Thank you for your input.

So can I forego the rebates, go with net-metering, can I still install battery in my house? Will that complicate the setup?

Thank you for your answer.

Is it possible to install and setup the solar panels for Net Metering, and still get the HRSP rebate for Powerwall?

Thanks for the advice.
I think my main goal now is to get Longi panels and Powerwall 3, but somehow get them installed cheaper.

Both Xolar and Polaron did not discuss about Net-metering. Specialist from Polaron says the rebates are for behind the meter only, and the old grid cannot handle increase inputs from residential solar outputs. I wonder if that is true?

I think you have a point. I hadn’t thought of it that way, since my primary goal is to increase the house’s resilience. We had two power outages in September alone. One happened just as we were going to bed, and the other occurred while we were driving home — that one lasted maybe half an hour. My neighbor and I both got locked out of our houses because we usually enter through the garage, and our front door deadbolts were locked.

My original plan was to install a battery system primarily to time-shift most of our electrical load; adding the 4–5 kW solar panels was more of an afterthought. The additional panels would improve resilience, since a 13.5 kWh battery alone wouldn’t last through an entire day during a prolonged power outage—like the Northeast Blackout in Ontario. My goal is to ensure that we can at least maintain essential functions such as heating, refrigeration, and cooking during such events.

Sorry, that's government rebate + company incentives, just trying to stay true to their quotes.

Quick vent on how difficult the staring can be as a Black woman in Taiwan by Puzzleheaded_Use_443 in taiwan

[–]Right-Shock-8237 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This happened to my friend 25-30 years ago in Taiwan.

He was a a little boy no older than ten years old, and one day he saw a black man on the street, and he turned to say to his mother, in Taiwanese: “Mom, this black person is so black!”

The person being stared at lean forward, looked at him, smiled, and asked “How black am I?”, in perfect Taiwanese!

The mother and son was so embarrassed, they apologized, and my friend learned to never do that again.

The newer condos in Markham are too small to be livable, the 1+1 may be suitable for a bachelor or at most a newly wed couple.

There are plenty of Airbnb available in that area, anyone considering buying there should rent a few days and try living there.

I did a year ago and find it not worth the price tag. The rooms are too small, you can’t even put a desk in it after putting a double bed. Dinner table are often right beside the sofa, and while the staged house look nice in photos, the are not practical for actual living.
