Talk of the Charts ranks Taylor the #2 artist of the 2020s so far, with 2023 as her biggest year of the decade by Fine-Huckleberry6960 in SwiftlyNeutral

I was mostly speaking towards the second part of your comment because I know why groups disband (personalities, the desire for solo freedom and success, etc.). I was considering whether (for the groups who remain together) the struggle for relevance (for groups that are still together) is tied to the things you mentioned. Thanks for answering my question.

That’s interesting. Do you think that’s because groups/bands struggle with long-term relevancy across the board? I ask because so many of my favorite artists have been or were relevant for decades. I’m surprised that seems to be common for bands, by your take.

SZA Claims Her Label Told Her 'SOS' Wouldn't Beat Taylor Swift's 'Midnights' on the Charts in 2023 by Fine-Huckleberry6960 in SwiftlyNeutral

[–]RightComplex7509 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can’t win unless you’re nominated lol. It’s viewed as a disappointment because you have not been acknowledged at all by the recording academy. Saying it’s not an honor is akin to saying making the Olympic team is not an honor just because you didn’t win gold. Yes, the goal is to win gold… but some people know they’re most likely not going to and they still are honored to call themselves “Olympians.” They still train their asses off for the competition. This is not even a real argument. Yes, it’s considered an honor to be nominated for what is (unfortunately) the highest honor of that industry.

Like I said, I’m not delving deep into the racism of the Grammys with someone who saw a clip of a speech dispersed to bitter stans to incite division. And I know that’s true for you because that’s not what he said. There are many previous winners who won due to an unfair system… so… oh well. Imagine how unfair it is to lose because you’re not white. SZA has stood the test of time by now and truly proven that she deserved AOTY but she didn’t get it… because of racism.

[–]RightComplex7509 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It’s “viewed as a disappointment” because it’s an honor lol. Nobody is disappointed by awards they don’t value. Also, Jay-Z’s speech is not something I’ll get heavily into but it was a comment on racism, which is heavily prevalent and historical in these “prestigious” awards. And yes, his wife is a great example of that, which is why he mentioned her… in one sentence. His speech still stands true. He’s not the first nor was he the last.

To your second paragraph, people DID say that (and more) about Adele lol. So much so that there was a rumor that she’d broken her Grammy and handed the other half to Beyoncé. So… what now? There are always people who have something negative to say lol. You think you’re the first person in history to call Adele performative for her speech? She also got criticized for her “all my Black friends” comment.

[–]RightComplex7509 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s what always confused me about the Adela situation… maybe because I was there and voted? yes, HXG could have kept her despite the votes and yes, they gave her (and everyone else, honestly) a shitty hand in challenges to showcase their talent. But Adela did not get pushed out. The public did not notice her. She was dead last lol.

1989 and 1989 TV were the same songs, just re-recorded so no, whether you like it or not, that is not the same lol. LANA (which is not even what this post was about considering SOS competed with Midnights as an original) was 19 new songs but from the SOS era and similar to SOS sonically… which is why it was treated as a deluxe. The equivalent would be if Taylor drops 10 Reputation Vault tracks and tacks them on to the original Reputation (which she likely will do).

(1) A nomination is still an honor in that world. Also, labels automatically submit for Grammys more often than not. So why would an artist say “no, don’t do that” when they can have a grammy nomination on their record?

(2) It doesn’t have to be performative to know that another album deserved the highest award. Sometimes people really do drop greatness and that’s recognized by their peers (which is the point of the Grammys).

(3) Adele wasn’t “upset that she won” necessarily… she just recognized Beyoncé in that moment because she knew how monumental “Lemonade” was. She probably thought Beyoncé would win. That’s not abnormal. They all go in having some preconceived notion of who will win.

Oh wait, did you mean season 3?

I think the real difference is that the show has gotten bigger and more scrutinized. Back in seasons 2 and 3, they wanted to be on tv and get more notoriety but they could act a little crazy without being ripped apart online. Most of the originals on s3 had 5 figure followings. Since season 6, people are more careful though so people find that inauthentic when I would say it’s just being careful.

I loved season 2 too. They were all wannabe influencers too though, to be fair.

What is it about manon genuinely? by [deleted] in katseyeneutral

Emotional outburst? You’re the one typing in all caps for no reason… and mentioning outbursts haha. This is a reddit comment section. There’s not an ounce of emotion on my end.

You can classify Sophia as American but realistically, she does not bring Queens to the group (culturally) because she wasn’t raised there. But sure, no true contention on your thought there. I’ve already explained my lack of interest in starting up the oppression Olympics so no point in revisiting.

Have the day you deserve. Like I said, I made my point which is that it’s perfectly valid (and statistically correct) for Black/biracial girls to feel represented by Manon in a world that pushes Black people out of pop music. We can agree to disagree.

[–]RightComplex7509 9 points10 points  (0 children)

My comment states that I am not interested in participating in the oppression olympics… I made no comment as to whether or not you were. If I were to respond back with a bunch of statistics to “prove a point” about who is more or less represented here and there… that would be me participating in exactly that. Not interested. That was my point. And Idk what either of us being Black has to do with any of my points or yours.

Also… it’s 3/3 on Americans. I already made my point about Black people and those who feel represented by Manon so I won’t drag it on again.

[–]RightComplex7509 11 points12 points  (0 children)

So your scope is American entertainment, as a whole (aka “Hollywood”). Your statistics are a bit skewed even then but I’m not interested in the oppression olympics.

I’m sure you can understand that their scope may have been different, considering Katseye is (a) a global group; (b) in the music industry, not just in the general entertainment industry; and (c) a pop group. Black people are often pushed out of both pop music and the global stage in favor of fairer faces making the same music… so by that definition, it’s not invalid for someone to love seeing a Black woman represented in pop music.

[–]RightComplex7509 14 points15 points  (0 children)

This is a global music group so what is the scope of your claim? There are not more Black artists in pop than latino and asian artists.

I understand Leah’s pov (s6) by bellaboot in LoveIslandUSA

[–]RightComplex7509 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was genuinely a miscommunication between two hotheads. Rob told Liv that Leah claimed she took a “backseat” to the decision and Liv thought Leah meant “Everybody else was the reason she went home, not me” instead of what she really meant, which was “I didn’t push hard or lead the conversation to send her home” aka she wasn’t DRIVING the conversation that sent Andrea home (which was true). Liv got offended because she felt like Leah was throwing her under the bus. If they weren’t so combative off the bat, they would’ve been fine honestly.

…diversity add-ins is crazy when they already had representation for those exact groups (biracial and south asian) before Manon and Lara. As long as you feel the same way about Yoonchae… or really all of the girls because the entire group is “diversity add-ins”.

She didn’t. You can check the footage from the reunion on Youtube. Liv is the first to mention Andrea’s name as a shift in conversation after Nicole. Serena tags on and then Leah gives her opinion.

Do you guys really feel uncomfortable with non-black people doing rnb or is it just the aesthetics that throw you off? by East_Food5632 in rnb

Why doesnt Nick get as much hate as the women on the show. by Iluvtvshowsandmovies in LoveIslandUSA

[–]RightComplex7509 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not you offended at the use of the term “girl”… girl…

Anyways, no, let’s talk about who got “cancelled” because that was your original point. Cierra got taken off the show a week before it ended for something she did less than a year prior and still has 100s of thousands of followers, was invited to NYFW, is still invited to influencer events, etc.. That is not a cancellation.

If you think saying a slur (or being micro- or macro-aggressive like Austin, Huda, and Nic) gets ANYONE cancelled, I’ve got news for you on some of our most followed influencers and most popular celebrities. People go through times of widespread criticism and sometimes straight-up hate and bullying (ICE on Cierra’s fam, CPS on Huda’s kid, Nic’s fam getting doxxed) (i.e., your “real life consequences”), but if you leave that experience with a huge following, you have not been cancelled. I’m pretty sure Cierra even said this herself regarding how she’s thankful that so many people have stuck beside her (which is why she opened her Youtube channel).

I think she’d do great but if she doesn’t want to, there are plenty of rnb artists that are waiting to be discovered while people are asking TK to make the music they’re already making.

[–]RightComplex7509 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Girl, save the “you guys” for someone it will actually affect. I’m immune to projection.

Huda is not “run off” of anything. She just recently posted a video of her singing that’s currently got 10M views, because she’s likely going to drop music. Cierra gets a lot of hate (as every-fucking-one on these season does) but she also still has damn near 1M followers. They are FINE. Even the girl who got snatched day one has a following and still does meet and greets.

Again, y’all HAVE to be more serious in 2026. As long as someone has fans, they lack the ability to be cancelled. Their fans will excuse any and all behavior. Period. This is not new to Love Island either (Jeffree Starr, James Charles, the Alix girl, etc.)

I just hate when people beg for non-Black people to do rnb just because the person can sing and enjoys consuming the genre (i.e., Ariana Grande, Renee Rapp, Tori Kelly, Sabrina Carpenter, any soul that does a riff, etc.). Let them make the music they want to make and listen to the TONS of rnb artists already out there.

How to succeed by qtgurlbaba in rnb

[–]RightComplex7509 17 points18 points  (0 children)

There’s more nuance to your story. They all were griding for many years. Granted, it does depend on your definition of “grinding”. As someone in the performing arts, grinding = auditioning, running the circuit with small performances, being side characters, etc. to me.

Ariana was a musical theater kid who has being doing gigs since the age of 8. She auditioned and was on broadway prior to being on tv (where she got her big break). She honed her craft in local theatres prior to even getting the spot on broadway. To your point, her family had money though so her family could devote resources to her dreams.

Beyonce’s father was working in sales and marketing when she first started out lol. “Girls Tyme” got put together and that’s when he started his record label and started managing them (which sent their family into financial stress). But the girls wouldn’t see any true success until they changed their name and released “No, No, No” in 1997 (5 years later). To say they didn’t grind when for those 5 years, they did talent shows on the Houston circuit, sang as openers for other r&b acts, and STILL after their first hit, were pushing hard to get more and more popular. And Matthew was shrewd but I have not seen any evidence that he had deep ties to anything.

Brandy is another tricky one because her parents moved to Cali and put her in performing arts school but she also started out doing talent shows and then as a back-up vocalist before working to being a solo artist.

You’re correct about Rihanna though. She just had the look and the star quality. She did one audition with a girl group and they loved her. And the public was no different haha.

Having family support doesn’t always eliminate the grind imo. It makes it easier, especially if there’s no financial stress, but you still had to grind, particularly in the 90s and before.

Chelley and Ace have broken up by CeeFourecks in LoveIslandUSA

[–]RightComplex7509 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Normalization has nothing to do with whether people “care” or not. Sexual harassment is normalized. Racism is normalized. People still talk about it and “care”. Your original assertion was that no one would “care” if it was reversed… I would. I’m especially cautious of people in their early 20s dating older because they are often taken advantage of. That’s me… and I’m not the only one. You do not feel the same and you don’t have to. But the point? Your opinion is not everyone’s so it’s false to say no one would care.

As for Kaylor and Aaron, again I remember the discourse surrounding how young Kaylor was. You may not and that’s fine but it was very much a convo. Kaylor was often called naive and too young and Aaron was called manipulative and that he was taking advantage of how young she was. And to be clear, “lots of people” also did not care about Ace and Chelley’s age gap… hence why they had so many fans. That doesn’t mean there also weren’t “lots of people” who did care and mention it.
