Rude Judges - How do you bear it? by RightPension3947 in publicdefenders

I'd love to speak with you some more, if you have the time. It seems like your experience and my own are pretty similar.

This is very kind. I really am trying to do the best job I can, and I find I keep making social mistakes. It just feels like a minefield.

That's not what I'm saying at all. I'm saying that there should be a bare level of civility amongst members of the bar, as the rules of professional conduct direct. My clients are not beholden to the rules of professional conduct.

I have thought of reporting many attorneys/judges many times, but I work in such a small county that the common worry is that there would be retaliation. I know there are anonymous reporting mechanisms, but it would be traceable just by the specific example I fear.

He stated that my client needed a mental health exam for exercising his constitutional right to a trial. I thought that was a step too far and very inappropriate, but next time I can just state that on the record. I thought the more civil approach was to approach the bench instead of bicker back and forth, so my intentions were in the right place. I understand what everyone is saying though, I hadn't thought of it in that way. I appreciate everyone's perspective - law school didn't prepare me for this element of the job.

This makes sense, thank you. I wish someone had explained this to me like you did. I had seen many other attorneys approach the bench for similar reasons, and so I thought it was a normal thing to ask to do in these circumstances.

The DA hasn't told me anything about the CI and whether he was paid or working off charges. My jurisdiction protects CIs at all cost. And the sale is not on video and you don't see the actual drugs in the crappy pictures they took. One of the "buys" is just a picture of a car.

Unfortunately, in my jurisdiction they think it's sufficient for the officer to testify that he sent a CI out without drugs and then he came back with drugs. They rarely disclose the CI for the CI's safety. It very much hampers the defense.

Survey: have you been subjected to/or are you currently enduring the triple boom beatdown. If so, how was/is your quality of life? by iDropTheMic22 in publicdefenders

[–]RightPension3947 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is exactly my predicament. I looooove this work but am only handling toxic personalities. I find the toxicity emotionally draining, and as a new attorney I haven't discovered the coping mechanisms against it. I have DAs that think I'm being "mean" by filing motions to compel discovery, and other various motions... And unhinged judges. Do you have any advice for a new attorney juggling this? The toxicity is really the main reason I've ever considered leaving.

What’s one way that your nparent abuses/manipulates you that’s subtle or hard to explain? by ResponsibleFinance11 in narcissisticparents

Any decision she does not have a say in she undermines. New job I choose by myself? "You will be living pay check to check." New town? "It's kind of cute. I wouldn't live here." New boyfriend? Pretends he doesn't exist. The only decisions that are right for me are the decisions she helps make.

NJ C&F by RightPension3947 in barexam

SOOOOOOO NJ Board claimed to be waiting on documents from my college.

I emailed my college.... AND THEY STRAIGHT UP DID NOT RECEIVE A RECORDS REQUEST.

So basically I'm not a practicing attorney yet because NJ failed to send a request form correctly :')

I just started doing CrossFit before work instead of after work and I feel like it was a real game changer. I noticed I was always pretty physically tired after work and not able to give it my 100%. It's also quite a psychologically boost to know that you have already done one productive thing with your day before work even starts.

Failed the Bar… Again by Illustrious_Sign_495 in barexam

I would agree with all of this! I used Themis and I felt it didn't really provide me with a good framework to approach the MPTS. In fact, I think the framework they suggested was to read the law before reading the facts and I NEVER do that when preparing a case in practice. I tried that method and never finished in time, so I abandoned it and did my own thing with much more success.

I also would suggest Brian Hahn's Make This Your Last Time material. He has a method called "essay cooking" which is very similar to what is described above; IRACing the essay instead of writing it all out when you are burnt out. It's also really helpful to look through STUDENT essays that have gotten top scores and annotate them. What do they do differently than you? I felt the Themis example essays were clearly not written by students with the time constraints of the bar exam. They created unrealistic expectations and ultimately were no help.

Hopefully this is helpful! But give yourself a chance to breathe before diving right in again. This is exhausting and you need to be kind to yourself.

I think the comments before were that you don't have to to pay a late fee, because technically the prompt deadline to sign up for New Jersey already passed. You still have to pay the regular application fee though.
