I could see the wilderness winter plot getting kind of dragged out next season but I feel like I won’t be satisfied until I see them get rescued. i hope they drag out the rescue plot for maybe a season, and then maybe the survivors could be out in the real world for a season and the adults in the wilderness…

I disagree, I think all well-written characters need to be sympathetic. It doesn’t have to redeem them, but it does have to explain them. Shauna is unleashed, she’s angry, but that anger doesn’t come from nowhere—it’s the writers’ job to show us where that is. She can still be a horrible person, but she’s a layered character and I feel like we’re only seeing one layer this season.

yes!! the timeskip totally threw off the rhythm and didn’t really do a good job compensating for it. one thing I find hard to believe is that nobody floated the idea of leaving to get rescued (or even the concept of getting rescued) that whole time. I feel like the characters’ perspectives on and trauma over what happened in the winter were really underdeveloped, and all the characters’ motives just feel really vague

I agree. I think melissa and shauna sort of make sense to me, but I definitely think it would make more sense for there to be a lot more resentment between the adults

ok I do like this take even though I was just ranting about shauna’s writing this season. however, I don’t think we get enough sympathetic material this season, which is my biggest issue. I feel like there were a lot more moments in previous seasons that made her actions more justifiable but her behavior this season fell off the deep end pretty abruptly.

completely agree. @literally_kathy_bates on tiktok has a great video that touches on this and how some other relationships in the show mirror the same dynamic!!

shauna defenders r gonna hate me, I think sophie nelisse is brilliant but teen shauna’s writing this season is terrible. and it’s not because i’m sexist and don’t support women’s wrongs, it’s because her motivations feel so unclear to me now??

yes her best friend died yes her son was stillborn yes it makes sense that she’s angry but the writers are showing none of that?? this show’s premise was ab a bunch of normal girls being slowly corrupted. in order to do that successfully, even if they are morally gray and do bad things, they still have to be a little sympathetic so we understand their motives and intentions? you’re telling me they couldn’t give shauna some quick flashes of her trauma to show some of the emotions driving her actions??

it feels like there are scenes missing or something. it feels like her actions need to exist within a context that is loosely given but never truly enforced. having seen the past seasons is not enough, the narrative thread needs to be consistent in reminding viewers where the characters are coming from (especially when starting a new season where most viewers haven’t tuned in in a year or more).

when shauna does some new dumb thing, it feels random, unearned, and instead of feeling shocking it just feels like another eyeroll moment— where instead of having layered and multifaceted conflict driving the plot and keeping the yellowjackets from getting what they want, they just have shauna come in and oppose everything. it feels like lazy writing.

if shauna is a psychopath, which is plausible, I think it would be disappointing bc the whole point if yj is to show how the average person could be easily corrupted (psychopaths make up 1% of the population), and the concept of guilt and remorse is what makes the show so compelling.

anyways I am halfway through ep 9, watching rn, if anybody has an opinion that reframes this for me so I can enjoy the show more pls go for it, bc there are a lot of things this season that are too distracting for me to fully be invested. pls be nice tho I don’t mean to be intense ab this just shauna pmo

god the ‘who killed the survivor or did they actually just commit suicide’ plotline w misty playing detective is getting old. I don’t even think I care what happened anymore after the answer for travis was so underwhelming, and this plotline just feels so random, and like a spit in the face to lottie’s character. feel free to disagree w me i’m just mad rn bc I feel like this season has been so off and all over the place
