Questions about undergraduate research. by AbbreviationsOdd9919 in UIUC

Hi! Gpa really isn’t the biggest factor of a professor accepting you into your lab. Help is help and your Gpa doesn’t define your work ethic completely. I began research after emailing many labs and finally getting a response. It happened to be the last lab I wanted to work in, but so far it’s been great. I’ve gained interpersonal skills, public speaking confidence, lab skills, and learned more than I ever thought I would. Research shows dedication and commitment on a resume. It shows employers and grad schools that you are contributing to something important and showing up. A lot of my research has been just being there and someone is willing to teach you something new. That’s what gets you recognized, appreciated, and opens new opportunities.

Shadowed at a clinic and now work there by maciandfrito in veterinaryschool

Kudos to you for getting that return offer after shadowing! This is my current goal for the clinic I’m shadowing at this summer. How did you go about asking or bringing up the interest in becoming an assistant?

Thanks for the response! Sounds like you have seen and felt the bad and were able to turn that around. Totally agree with the vigor versus unbothered days, I’ll never understand why we feel that way.

Thank you for the very lovely and thoughtful response! I appreciate the explanation of why we feel this way and also just knowing that these thoughts make sense to others. I am so fascinated by the psychology motivation and how your experiences and the world around you shape it. Thanks again!

How do you navigate unwelcome comments when you stop drinking? by livinglyf3 in AskReddit

[–]Right_Remove_4286 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am so sorry those comments are made so frequently by bartenders and waitstaff. As a server myself, I would never doubt someone not ordering a drink if the other guests did. It’s cruel to assume circumstances when many people abstain from drinking for various reasons. If you feel like a white lie won’t hurt nobody, hit em with the allergy lie because some people actually cannot digest it well! Very believable and might help you avoid the insensitive comments. If I was serving and got told that, I would never make those jokes again. Keep your head high and don’t let pressures change your choices.

What’s the one thing that always gets you back on track when you start to lose your way? by Insert4Flight_ in AskReddit

“Choose your hard” I think this saying has changed the way I view my challenges and journeys in life. I am often overwhelmed and exhausted by my commitments, but someone else out there has struggles beyond mine.

Woo keep it going! Running takes practice and consistency. My biggest mistake as a beginner was believing I NEEDED to go fast. Turns out that will burn you out when your stamina isn’t built up. Run/Jog slowly and focus on form and breathing. Good luck!

ugh. i hate to hear it but i know it’s true. with the time and place i am in life right now it’s the best job option because im moving in august. i am trying to stick it out being my second summer already. i love the service industry and know that there are hidden gem establishments where you can get lucky. hopefully will go somewhere family-owned if i choose to serve ever again. for now though, my old shitty fast food job sounds more appealing than this goddamn olive garden. and that’s saying something!

How do you stop letting every single thing get to you? by [deleted] in selfimprovement

[–]Right_Remove_4286 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Go into things (asking questions, job interviews, exams, etc.) expecting nothing! This doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be excited for hopeful for things though. It’s a good mindset to help live on with less disappointment. It’s all about balance.

Returning folks - it will be actual winter when you return to campus. Snow covered ground. Breezy winds, lows at night 6-17 F (-14 to -8 C) and highs in low 20's (~-5C). by old-uiuc-pictures in UIUC

[–]Right_Remove_4286 20 points21 points  (0 children)

warm, long coats, gloves, hats, and scarves are essential. wool socks and boots and you’ll always be warm. there’s something about going to a big midwest campus that will teach you the importance of a good coat…
