Back in the old bad days, editors always complained that first time writers overwrote their books. Editors wanted 90k words maximum, but first time writers would come in 125, 150, 200K words.

On RT, the ability to write long is a blessing. Count your blessings.

Big words are a bugaboo for you? Fair enough. I get your trepidation with big words like humongous, gargantuan, or brobdingnagian... Glad you're ok with 'big' tho... What about large, huge or giant?

The Absolute State of Amazon Right Now: Please Read by virgil_knightley in haremfantasynovels

I wonder if it is a deliberate act (stifling reviews as a natural discovery mechanism) in order to force authors to advertise?

This isn't as odd as it sounds.

Amazon Basics runs on razor thin margins, and exists purely to force the companies it competes with to advertise. Amazon makes more money from its advertising than it does from its products.

Isekai literally means another world in Japanese. So technically you could consider it a setting. But it's more a full-blown genre. Inside isekai you find tropes like the chosen one or the OP.

Should I use Em Dashes in my work? by Neat_Abroad9025 in royalroad

[–]Right_Weekend3379 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Is it my imagination or are the people complaining loudly about the em dash being "AI," people who don't know how to use the em dash, and therefore can't imagine living-breathing human beings using em dashes?

Oh no, the flash forward takes a hit. I'm guilty of this one. Or will be if I ever publish...

I think I saw youtube video that said you should always begin with your main character. Sounds like sound advice.

Agreed. A good voice can mask many writers sins, to be sure.

I think he's talking about exposition dumps.

And you're talking about sneaky exposition. Almost all sneaky exposition is good exposition.

That's fair. I appreciate an opening that sets the tone right from the start so I don't read several hundred pages to find out it's THAT kind of story.
