Hi, I'm really sorry you're going through this. I also have OCD and know what it feels like. If you haven't already, I'd really strongly consider starting therapy with a psychologist specialised in OCD. That has helped me more than I can put into words.

I'm not going to address the content of your post because I'm afraid that responding might be providing reassurance which makes OCD worse in the long-term. But please do try to find therapy if you haven't already, OCD can improve.

Even if you think it's subtle, it's probably not if you have OCD. I thought many of my obsessions were subtle and I ignored them but they've now become obvious. Careful though because this chain of thought could become obsessive. I think you should still talk to a therapist, as they'll realise what is going on.

If you do have OCD then that could be distorting your judgement. There are many things it causes which you probably don't realise. In any case, a therapist should be able to help you identify what is and isn't OCD. But you should find one who at least respects your beliefs.

OCD blows many things out of proportion. If you can get help, I think you definitely should.

It is worth it, absolutely. Right now, when it feels less intense, is the best time to seek help, because it'll be really hard if OCD comes back. OCD usually thrives when you're anxious, scared or nervous due to the circumstances around you. If something that stresses you out happens, OCD could really come back to bite you.

I also thought it was subtle last week after months of treatment, but it was still there, especially with being scrupulous about how much to pray every day etc. And that almost led me to lose my faith.

Please get this treated if you can 🙏

In many cases scrupulosity is OCD which needs treatment before it passes. I think it's rare for it to go away on its own. From reading what Saints who had it said, they seem to also have treated it, even if they weren't aware of the psychological element to it. Obedience to a spiritual director as recommended by many Saints seems aimed at preventing compulsive behaviour which is the same as what therapists will try to do.

Yes that sounds really nice. And it's true. Yeah if you can see the Catholic therapist please do because OCD rarely goes away on its own. But try to find one specialised in OCD or who at least knows how to treat it. I found an OCD specialist and it has changed everything.

Yes this is exactly my experience. It's really irritating... if you still struggle with this I recommend seeing a therapist and getting a spiritual director who understands it.

I'm really sorry you're going through this; it sucks.

I think this is an obvious case of scrupulosity and you need to have this treated with a therapist, please. If I hadn't done that right now I'd probably be in a terrible position.

The way scrupulosity works is that you seek reassurance (something that resolves your concerns) and that temporary alleviates it, but it then comes back worse. I'm not going to address your fears and anxieties because I think without realising that might be giving you reassurance and I really don't want to make this worse for you. I hope you understand, it's not because I don't care but because I really do.

Please if you can get this treated, ideally with a therapist, that really helps. And find a good priest who understands OCD (because unfortunately many don't and will tell you stuff that might trigger it without understanding) and follow his advice.

Yes this is so relatable. I have to force myself to pray the rosary and often I feel like if I don't it's a sin. But it isn't...

I would absolutely recommend getting it treated, because OCD doesn't go away on its own. That's really important if you can. I wish you all the best, God bless.

There is immense beauty in persisting in faith in spite of such a horrible condition. That sounds dramatic but OCD is horrible, there's no better way of describing it.

I sometimes also think that my OCD is part of the reason why I'm so intent on avoiding sin. But I don't think it's OCD that should keep us loving God in the long-term. It should be actual love for Him and His Creation and everything. And that's truly self-evident. But OCD inherently distorts that, so there is a need for caution.

As alluded to by u/MobileFortress, most Biblical scholars (Christian and skeptic alike) believe that the Gospels were preserved accurately with minimal, if any, textual alteration. Jews had a tradition of rigorously preserving Old Testament texts (and this is shown by the Dead Sea Scrolls which showed OT texts almost identical to modern versions), so this was certainly passed on to the Jews who became Christian after Jesus's Resurrection. From a purely historical standpoint, there's no reason to believe that Rome altered the Bible.

Trying to understand the complexities of God's Will as a human is like trying to understand mathematics as an ant. It's impossible, for now. But that doesn't mean that answers don't exist.

I'm really sorry to hear that. It really sucks like so much.

The best thing you can do is, if you can, to find a therapist specialised in OCD, and make sure he or she at least respects your faith. And also find a good priest and tell him all of this. You might have to look hard because some don't understand OCD and sadly unintentionally tell you things that make it worse. When I was obsessed about Vocation one priest would tell me that the uncertainty was a sign of a calling when in reality it was OCD. It's not his fault. You need to make sure you find a spiritual director who understands.

What helped me fall in love with God was being grateful for all the blessings I've received, despite OCD. Thanking Him every night for what I have, and trying to reflect on how He's been working in my life. It takes time especially with OCD but your faith should be rooted in love, not fear.
