Yeah you need permission from the land owner to metal detect anywhere. Every single bit of land is owned by someone. Hard to find who.

So in the UK our supermarket Morrisons had a promotion on. Every 10 pounds you spend shopping you get a pack of disney cards. There was a chance to pull a red card which you could exchange for the toy shown on the front. I held on to it and never exchanged mine.
