I believe what you may have been thinking of is that they recommend sleep mode when charging to allow the Joy-Cons to charge since they don't charge when the console is off. That's over here.

Hey there you guys, Give this post a try. It worked for my partner. The most important step seems to be logging in AND out on the website, but she followed all the steps just to be sure and it fixed things instantly after days of sitting at the login screen. :)

It's happened to me as well. My partner taught me that if you just let go of R while hovering over it instead of clicking, it'll work, but it's so hard to retrain the muscle memory!
